Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made two notable selection decisions ahead of his side's Premier League meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion, omitting both Enzo Fernandez and Robert Sanchez from the matchday squad entirely.
Fernandez's absence continues a recent trend, having already been left out of the Blues' Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town during the week. The Argentine midfielder's future at Stamford Bridge has come under scrutiny amid reported interest from Manchester City, who are said to be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old. Adding to the tension, Fernandez was jeered by supporters of both Chelsea and Fulham during Monday's west London derby.
Despite the swirling speculation, Alonso was keen to stress that the decision to exclude Fernandez from the squad had nothing to do with any transfer saga. Speaking before kickoff, the Chelsea boss explained that the call was made purely with the team's performance in mind.
"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso said.
With Fernandez sidelined, Alonso turned to Romeo Lavia and Malo Gusto to occupy the central midfield roles in his 3-4-2-1 setup against Brighton.
The other major talking point centered on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was also dropped from the squad entirely. In his place, Alonso opted for Mike Penders, the young Belgian goalkeeper who had featured in goal during the midweek cup tie against Luton. Penders was named among the substitutes for the Brighton fixture, while summer arrival Martinez, who lined up alongside Fernandez in last year's World Cup final for Argentina, was given the nod to start between the posts having been registered in time for the match.
Alonso offered a similarly measured explanation when asked about Sanchez's omission, indicating that difficult calls are sometimes necessary for the good of the squad.
"We'll see. It was a decision we thought was good for the team, for the club," Alonso said. "Sometimes you have to take tough decisions because this one is an important one. But now we need to look forward."
The dual exclusions represent a significant shake-up for Chelsea as Alonso continues to shape his squad and establish his preferred setup. Fernandez, who has been a regular fixture in the Chelsea midfield since his high-profile move from Benfica, now finds himself on the outside looking in, with the transfer speculation surrounding him showing no signs of abating. Meanwhile, the decision to leave out an established first-team goalkeeper like Sanchez in favor of promoting Penders suggests Alonso is willing to make bold calls regardless of reputation or seniority.
As Chelsea look to build momentum in the Premier League, all eyes will be on how these personnel decisions play out, both in terms of results on the pitch and the broader narrative surrounding Fernandez's long-term future at the club. For now, Alonso remains focused on the present, insisting that unity and commitment within the squad take precedence over any external noise.
