Gabriel Jesus is closing in on a move to Barcelona, with the Brazilian forward expected to depart Arsenal before Tuesday's transfer deadline in a deal reported to be worth around £8.6m (10m euros).
Negotiations between the two clubs have gathered pace in recent days, and although some details are still being finalised, the transfer is expected to be wrapped up before the window shuts. Jesus is due to travel for a medical on Monday, paving the way for him to complete his switch to the Spanish champions.
The 29-year-old has fallen out of Arsenal's first-team plans this season and had been training away from the main squad as speculation over his future intensified. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed the situation on Thursday, confirming that Jesus was absent from training ahead of the club's Premier League fixture against Aston Villa.
When pressed on whether this signalled the striker's departure, Arteta gave a pointed response. "Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it's clear," the Spanish coach said, seemingly acknowledging that Jesus's Arsenal career is drawing to a close.
Jesus arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 in a deal that was seen as a statement of intent from Arteta's side. Across 123 appearances for the Gunners, he contributed 32 goals and 22 assists, playing a role in the club's resurgence as genuine title contenders. However, with his contract entering its final year and question marks over his long-term role in the squad, Arsenal have opted to sanction his sale rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Napoli had also registered interest in the forward, but Barcelona appear to have won the race, with Jesus reportedly keen on a return to Spanish football. Arsenal are understood to have lowered their initial valuation in order to push the deal through before the deadline, prioritising a swift departure over maximising the transfer fee.
For Barcelona, the move fits into a broader push to bolster their attacking options before the window closes. The Catalan club have been exploring several forward targets this summer, with Manchester City's Julian Alvarez reportedly their primary target. Arsenal themselves retain an interest in Alvarez, though a move for the Argentine appears increasingly unlikely given the limited time remaining and the fact that talks with his representatives have not advanced.
Arsenal are also working to finalise the departure of Fabio Vieira, who is expected to complete a permanent transfer to Hamburg for a fee reported to be under £10m. The Portuguese midfielder spent last season on loan at the Bundesliga club and had expressed a desire to return there on a permanent basis, an outcome that now looks set to be confirmed before deadline day.
With both Jesus and Vieira poised to leave, Arsenal appear intent on streamlining their squad in the closing days of the transfer window, freeing up resources and squad space as they look to reshape their options heading into the new season.
