Coventry City have strengthened their backline for the season ahead by securing the services of Stephen Mfuni on a season-long loan from Manchester City, the Premier League club has confirmed.
The 18-year-old defender arrives at the club as head coach Frank Lampard continues to reshape his squad following Coventry's promotion to the top flight at the end of the previous campaign. Mfuni becomes the 11th player to join Coventry this summer as Lampard looks to fortify the team for the challenges of Premier League football.
Mfuni, who qualifies for England at youth level and has represented the Under-19s, is still in the early stages of his senior career. He made his first-team debut for Manchester City last season, coming on as a substitute during a commanding 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the FA Cup. Beyond that appearance, the teenager has yet to establish himself at senior level for his parent club.
To aid his development, City sent Mfuni out on loan to Watford, where he gained valuable Championship experience, featuring in eight matches for the Hornets. That spell is expected to have played a part in Coventry's decision to pursue the young defender, who is capable of operating in multiple positions across the back line.
Speaking after putting pen to paper on the move, Mfuni expressed his excitement at the opportunity to join Coventry and work under Lampard.
