Coventry City survived a spirited fightback from League One side Plymouth Argyle to claim a 5-3 victory in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday night, booking their place in the third round after a match that swung dramatically from a comfortable-looking rout into a genuine contest.
Frank Lampard's side, still searching for direction in the Premier League, made the perfect start at Home Park, racing into a two-goal lead inside the opening four minutes. New signing Taiwo Awoniyi opened his account for the club before Jack Rudoni doubled the advantage soon after, leaving the home crowd stunned early on.
With roughly 2,100 travelling supporters having made the lengthy 444-mile round trip in good voice, it looked as though Coventry might run away with the tie. But Tom Cleverley's Plymouth side, who have built something of a reputation for cup upsets, refused to fold. Oliver Irow, just a day after putting pen to paper on his loan move from Tottenham, latched onto a pass from Harvey White to cut the deficit before half-time, driving past defender Joel Latibeaudiere and beating debutant goalkeeper Dan Bentley.
The hosts continued to grow in confidence after the break, and their pressure told nine minutes into the second half when Xavier Amaechi dispossessed a struggling Liam Kitching and finished smartly to level the score at 2-2. Plymouth came close to completing the turnaround shortly after, with Bentley forced into a smart save to push away a follow-up effort from Will Evans after failing to hold White's initial shot.
Just as the momentum appeared to have shifted decisively toward the League One outfit, Coventry responded. Substitute Ephron Mason-Clark, making his first appearance of the campaign after recovering from a hamstring injury, restored the visitors' lead. His goal came from a cross by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto that caused confusion in the Plymouth box; after initially failing to connect, Mason-Clark benefited from Victor Torp squaring the ball back across goal for an easy tap-in.
The result was sealed late on when Plymouth substitute Joe Edwards inadvertently handled the ball while attempting to clear a corner, giving referee Elliott Swallow no option but to point to the spot. Torp stepped up and buried the penalty into the top corner to make it 5-3 and put the tie beyond doubt.
Speaking afterward, Lampard acknowledged the difficulty of managing a game that threatened to slip away from his side despite the fast start. "You've got to enjoy a win, always," he said, adding that returning with a positive result made for a pleasant four-hour journey home. He also reflected on how quickly momentum can change in cup fixtures away from home, noting that emotions and crowd energy can make such matches far trickier than the scoreline initially suggests, but praised his team's ability to see out the contest.
For Cleverley, the outcome offered plenty of encouragement despite the defeat, particularly given his side's response after falling two goals behind early on. He praised his players' quality and character in keeping the tie competitive. The Plymouth boss had also spoken before kickoff about his hopes for English managers, including Lampard and Michael Carrick, to continue proving themselves at the top level.
Lampard, too, touched on the scrutiny facing English coaches, suggesting that perception often hinges on short-term results rather than sustained performance over time.
With the win, Coventry advance to the third round of the Carabao Cup, while Plymouth exit the competition having given the Championship side a considerably tougher test than the early scoreline suggested.
