Nottingham Forest have struck a club-record deal worth approximately £50m to sign striker Liam Delap from Chelsea, as the Premier League club presses ahead with a summer clear-out of its attacking options.
The 23-year-old is set to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the City Ground this week, in a transfer that eclipses the £116m sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City as the largest fee involved in a Forest deal. Chelsea will receive £45m up front, with a further £5m payable in add-ons.
The move represents a swift reversal of fortunes for Delap, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Ipswich Town only last summer for £30m, having fought off interest from Manchester United and Everton at the time. That switch, however, failed to deliver, with the forward managing just a single Premier League goal amid a campaign hampered by shoulder and hamstring problems.
Chelsea's decision to make Delap available reflects their evolving strategy up front. Manager Xabi Alonso has settled on João Pedro and Danny Welbeck as his primary striking options this season, a hierarchy that leaves other forwards searching for regular football elsewhere. The Blues have already reinforced that department by bringing in Welbeck from Brighton and Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg.
At Forest, manager Oliver Glasner had identified Delap as a priority target, seeing an opportunity to help the striker rediscover the form that made him such a sought-after prospect. He will provide fresh competition for Chris Wood and Igor Jesus, neither of whom found the net as Forest opened their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds United.
Delap's career path has taken him through several clubs since progressing through Derby County's academy before a move to Manchester City in 2019. He was part of City's FA Youth Cup-winning side that year and later scored 24 goals in 20 Premier League 2 appearances during the 2020-21 season as City claimed that title. His senior breakthrough came in September 2020, netting on his City debut in a League Cup victory over Bournemouth before making his Premier League bow days later against Leicester.
Injuries subsequently limited his opportunities at City, leading to loan spells in the Championship with Stoke, Preston North End and Hull City between 2022 and 2024. City eventually sold him to Ipswich for £20m in the summer of 2024, and he responded with 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances as the newly promoted side battled in the top flight.
The Delap transfer forms part of a broader summer overhaul at Forest, who have already brought in defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for £34m, plus free-agent additions Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda. Outgoings have included the sale of striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Coventry City for £9m alongside the Anderson deal.
Meanwhile, Chelsea's business is not finished. The club has opened discussions with Aston Villa over selling forward Nicolas Jackson, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich. Chelsea value the Senegal international at £65m and are seeking a permanent sale rather than another loan arrangement. Villa view Jackson as a potential successor to Ollie Watkins, who is expected to depart for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, though Atlético Madrid have also shown interest in the 25-year-old.
