Cardiff City have once again handed a record-breaking start to one of their academy prospects, with 15-year-old Anyadike becoming the youngest player ever to represent the club after featuring in the EFL Cup.
The teenage defender's appearance eclipses the previous mark set by Axel Donczew, who was 15 years and 234 days old when he made his Cardiff debut, and Rob Tankiewicz, who had held a separate youngest-player record at 16 years and 117 days. Anyadike's introduction to first-team football means Cardiff have now broken their own youngest-player record for the third time in under a year, highlighting the club's growing emphasis on fast-tracking academy talent into competitive fixtures.
Despite the milestone, Anyadike does not hold the overall record for the youngest player to appear in an English Football League match. That distinction remains with Reuben Noble-Lazarus, who was just 15 years and 45 days old when he debuted for Rochdale in 2008. Notably, Noble-Lazarus was once a teammate of current Cardiff boss Barry-Murphy during his playing days, adding a personal connection to the achievement.
Speaking about the decision to select Anyadike for the cup tie, Barry-Murphy praised the young defender's rapid development and insisted the call was based purely on merit rather than novelty.
