Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of winger Savio from Manchester City in a deal worth £75million, with an additional £5million in guaranteed add-ons and a further £5million tied to performance-related clauses. The transfer was confirmed on Tuesday, marking one of the more significant moves of a hectic transfer window for the north London club.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi spoke to the media following the deal's completion, explaining the thinking behind the club's pursuit of the young Brazilian. According to De Zerbi, Spurs identified a specific gap in their squad that Savio's skill set could fill.
"If you analyse the last season, we need players capable to win one-v-ones and create chances to score," De Zerbi said. "In terms of one-v-ones, he is one of the best players — and [also partly] because he is 2004."
The Italian coach also revealed that his interest in Savio predates the player's move to Manchester City, suggesting a long-standing admiration for his talent. "I know him for a long time. I spoke with him before he went to City. He is a big player for us," De Zerbi added.
Despite the hefty price tag, Savio's return in front of goal during his time at the Etihad Stadium was modest. The winger managed just two goals across 53 Premier League appearances for City, a statistic that some might view as a concern given the size of the investment. However, De Zerbi appeared unfazed by this aspect of the player's record, framing it instead as an area for development rather than a red flag.
"I don't know if I'm the right man [to help him score more], but he has to achieve," the coach said. He went on to elaborate on what he believes separates good creative players from truly elite ones. "Players so good at creating chances, to be complete they need to score. If you analyse the other top wingers in the world, many score ten or 15 goals a season. He has the qualities."
De Zerbi continued by outlining what he sees as necessary adjustments to Savio's game moving forward. "He has the habits, he has to change habits, be focused on one-v-ones and score. You become a top team by scoring more goals," he explained, underlining his belief that goal output is central to Tottenham's ambitions this season.
The Savio deal arrived amid a broader wave of transfer activity across the Premier League, with De Zerbi also being asked about reports linking a move for forward Omar Marmoush. The coach was reluctant to discuss speculation involving players from other clubs, simply stating, "It is not right to speak about other players from other teams." He did, however, characterise the current transfer window as a "crazy market," reflecting the frenetic pace of business being conducted across Europe's top leagues.
For Tottenham, the addition of Savio represents a significant financial commitment and a clear statement of intent as De Zerbi looks to reshape the squad according to his tactical philosophy. Whether the winger can translate his undoubted one-on-one ability into a more prolific scoring record remains to be seen, but the club's coaching staff appear confident that the raw talent is there to be unlocked.
