Chelsea have confirmed the departure of attacking midfielder Josh Kellyman, who has completed a permanent move to Strasbourg, the club's sister side under the BlueCo ownership group, for an undisclosed fee.
The 20-year-old, formerly of Aston Villa's academy, spent two seasons on Chelsea's books without breaking into the senior setup at Stamford Bridge. Instead, his development continued away from west London, most notably during a productive loan spell at Cardiff City last season. Kellyman was instrumental in the Bluebirds' promotion push, contributing 11 goals and two assists across 42 appearances in all competitions under manager Brian Barry-Murphy. His form earned him the EFL Young Player of the Month award in February.
Despite that impressive loan campaign, Kellyman's path back into Chelsea's first team looked increasingly unlikely once Xabi Alonso took charge. He did feature on the club's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, coming off the bench in friendly matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Western Sydney Wanderers, but there was little indication he would be part of Alonso's plans for the upcoming campaign.
His Chelsea career included six senior appearances, two of which came in the Premier League, before Villa sold him to the London club two years ago. He has now signed a five-year contract with Strasbourg, committing his long-term future to the French Ligue 1 outfit.
Kellyman becomes the latest in a long line of Chelsea-affiliated players to join Strasbourg, a club that has increasingly served as a development and pathway option since the two sides came under the same ownership umbrella. As part of the arrangement, Chelsea are understood to have retained a buy-back option on the player, keeping the door open for a potential return in the future.
At Strasbourg, Kellyman links up with several familiar faces connected to Chelsea. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and forward Genesis Antwi are both currently on loan there from Stamford Bridge, while former Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is also part of the squad. The pipeline between the two clubs has been particularly active this summer, with Strasbourg duo Valentin Barco and Emmanuel Emegha making the reverse journey to join Chelsea.
Strasbourg's relationship with Chelsea has also proven lucrative in other ways. Winger Diego Moreira, who came through the same pathway, was recently sold from Strasbourg to AC Milan in a deal worth £60million, with Chelsea believed to hold a significant sell-on clause from his original move.
Other players to have previously spent time at the French club as part of this arrangement include Aaron Anselmino, Mamadou Sarr, Mike Penders, Kendry Paez and David Datro Fofana. Andrey Santos, who left Chelsea for Manchester United in a £50million transfer this past July, also enjoyed a successful loan spell in Strasbourg earlier in his career, using it as a springboard to his big-money move to Old Trafford.
Strasbourg have also emerged as a potential destination being considered for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is expected to go out on loan to regain match fitness and secure regular playing time after recently resolving anti-doping proceedings with the Football Association.
