Boreham Wood forward Abdul Abdulmalik has made a public plea to leave the National League club, declaring himself ready for a step up after the club turned down a second bid from Swedish top-flight side Djurgarden.
The Scandinavian club had already seen a £1m offer for the 23-year-old rebuffed earlier this month before returning with an improved proposal of £1.5m. That fee would have set a new record for a player moving from English football's fifth tier, surpassing the £1m Leicester City paid Fleetwood Town for Jamie Vardy back in 2012. Boreham Wood, however, have shown no willingness to let their forward go.
Manager Luke Garrard made his stance clear after Abdulmalik was omitted from the matchday squad for Saturday's 3-0 win over Forest Green Rovers, insisting simply that "he is our player."
Undeterred, Abdulmalik released a statement through his agent expressing gratitude to the club while making it plain he sees his future elsewhere. "Everyone at Boreham Wood FC and the incredible fans have played a massive part [in my journey]. You will always have my respect," he said. "With this said, I'm ready for the next challenge. I'm ready to prove to myself and those around me that I'm capable of reaching the top."
The forward's rise has been rapid. After joining Boreham Wood as a free agent in 2024 following his release from Millwall, Abdulmalik enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2025-26, netting 17 goals and registering 10 assists as the club reached the National League play-off final. He was influential in that showpiece at Wembley, both scoring and assisting despite the club's push for promotion ultimately falling short.
His path to first-team recognition was not straightforward. Abdulmalik progressed through Millwall's academy setup and earned an England call-up at under-17 level, later playing a key role in the Lions' Under-21 side, which won back-to-back Professional Development League South titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24. Despite that pedigree, a route to regular senior football at Millwall never opened up, and he was released in 2024 before dropping into non-league football with Boreham Wood.
In his statement, Abdulmalik framed the Djurgarden interest as a rare and fleeting opportunity that he feels compelled to seize. "Through sheer hard work and perseverance, the opportunity to progress has come around. This is my chance to push myself as a footballer, elevate my game and most importantly fulfil my promise to the ones around me," he said.
He also spoke more broadly about the difficulties facing talented players outside the professional pyramid's upper tiers. "Opportunities like this are rare, especially within the National League where some of the hardest working talent is overlooked," he added, before stressing the unpredictable nature of football's transfer landscape. "The game of football is forever changing and decisions are fast paced. There's no guarantee that the same chances come knocking twice. I owe it to myself and the kids growing up just like me to fight for this one I've been offered."
The stand-off leaves Boreham Wood facing a delicate situation: balancing the financial windfall a sale would bring against the sporting value of retaining their most productive attacking talent.
