Manchester United have finalised the signing of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £70m, adding another midfielder to their ranks following a difficult start to the Premier League season.
The transfer sees United pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m possible in add-ons, while Brighton have secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement. The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further twelve months.
Baleba's arrival continues a busy summer of midfield reinforcement for United, who had already brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa before sealing this latest deal. The club's total outlay for the transfer window now stands at £153m as they gear up for a return to Champions League football this season.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Baleba described the switch as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. "It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams," he said. "Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour." He also expressed enthusiasm about working under Michael Carrick, adding: "I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. United had previously tried to sign Baleba last year but were deterred by Brighton's asking price, which exceeded £100m at the time.
Baleba joined Brighton from French side Lille in 2023 and went on to make 112 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring four goals. He featured 31 times in the Premier League last term as Brighton finished eighth, a result that secured qualification for this season's Conference League. He is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton's pre-season training camp in Austria and will need time to build up his match fitness before featuring for his new club.
Statistically, Baleba's 2024-25 campaign underlined the qualities that convinced United to pursue him for a second time. He ranked among the Premier League's most productive midfielders defensively, placing fourth for possessions won in the middle third and interceptions, fifth for ball recoveries, and seventh for duels won. His athletic profile was also notable, reaching a top speed of 34.5km/h during the campaign and averaging 8.2 defensive actions per 90 minutes.
While his distribution numbers are more modest compared to other central midfielders, his ability to drive forward with the ball—averaging 6.7 progressive carries per 90 minutes—suggests he can offer United both defensive stability and a means of transitioning quickly from defence to attack. He spent the vast majority of his minutes last season operating as a defensive midfielder, though he has shown versatility, including previous experience at left-back.
His signing represents one of the most significant financial commitments United have made for a midfielder in recent years, trailing only their record outlay for Paul Pogba.
