As the new season reaches the one-month mark, London clubs are beginning to see encouraging returns from the young players they have sent out on loan across the English Football League. While some are still fighting for regular game time, others have already begun making a genuine impact for their temporary sides.
Among the standout performers was Brentford centre-back Josh Stephenson, who netted his first senior goal to salvage a stoppage-time draw for Crewe Alexandra in their away trip to Colchester United. The 20-year-old, who joined Brentford's B team from Millwall in November 2024, has quickly established himself at Crewe, featuring in every minute of the club's last five league matches as they remain unbeaten, with four draws and a win to show for it.
Stephenson's composed left-footed finish deep into added time rounded off a strong display from the defender. "I was in the right place at the right time, and I just needed to hit it as sweet as possible," he said afterwards. "A really proud moment, and some way to do it."
Tottenham's Oliver Irow also caught the eye with a spectacular strike as Plymouth Argyle extended their impressive start to the campaign with a 3-0 win over Barnsley at Home Park. The 20-year-old picked the ball up under pressure just outside the box before unleashing a fierce right-footed effort into the top corner inside the opening minute. It was Irow's second goal in five appearances for Plymouth, adding to his strike in a 4-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Premier League side Coventry City. Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Mansfield Town, Irow appears to be growing into an influential figure for the League One club.
At Portsmouth, manager John Mousinho has leaned heavily on the loan market this term, bringing in Brentford defenders Jayden Meghoma and Benjamin Arthur along with 17-year-old Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen. The teenager wasted little time making his mark, scoring on his second appearance for the club in a win at Bristol City. More recently, it was Meghoma and Arthur who impressed as they combined to help Portsmouth secure a resilient 0-0 draw away at Charlton Athletic. Arthur was particularly influential, registering more clearances than anyone else on the pitch while avoiding conceding a single foul throughout the match.
Elsewhere, Tottenham's connection with Leyton Orient continues to bear fruit, with 21-year-old midfielder Yusuf Akhamrich enjoying a productive start to life in League One after impressing on loan at Bristol Rovers last season. The Moroccan youth international has racked up three goals and three assists in six league appearances, including two assists in Orient's 3-2 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers. His deliveries led to an own goal from Wycombe captain Jack Grimmer and later set up Jaze Kabia, though it wasn't enough to prevent defeat.
Finally, Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi is beginning to turn heads at Fleetwood Town, scoring in consecutive matches against Shrewsbury Town and Newport County despite having played fewer than 100 league minutes so far this season. His most recent goal came just five minutes after being introduced as a substitute, as he stabbed home from close range to level the score. With his early form, the 20-year-old could soon be pushing for a regular starting role.
