Cardiff has been chosen to stage the 2029 women's Champions League final, with UEFA confirming that Principality Stadium will welcome Europe's top clubs for the showpiece occasion. The 73,931-capacity venue, which has previously hosted a men's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in 2017, will now turn its attention to the women's game later this decade.
For the purposes of the final, the stadium will be renamed National Stadium of Wales in order to comply with UEFA's sponsorship regulations, a standard requirement for finals held at the venue.
The announcement marks a significant moment for women's football in Wales, coming nine years after Cardiff City Stadium played host to the 2017 women's Champions League final, when Lyon defeated Paris Saint-Germain on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time.
Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney welcomed the news, describing it as a landmark decision for the country's footballing development. "It's brilliant news for Cymru and the FAW and the journey that we're on, particularly in the women's game," Mooney said.
He stressed that the significance of hosting the final extends well beyond the event itself, framing it as part of a broader push to grow the sport domestically. "This is about much more than one night in 2029," Mooney added. "Our ambition is for the UEFA women's Champions League final to become a catalyst for the continued transformation of women's and girls' football in Wales."
Principality Stadium, the largest in Wales, has built a reputation in recent years for hosting major footballing occasions. Earlier this year, it staged the FA Community Shield, where Premier League champions Arsenal secured a 3-0 win over Manchester City.
The Cardiff announcement was part of a wider raft of hosting decisions confirmed by UEFA for its major club competition finals across 2028 and 2029. Munich's Football Arena will host the men's Champions League final in 2028, before the competition's showpiece moves to Barcelona's Camp Nou in 2029 - a fixture that will mark three decades since Manchester United's dramatic late triumph over Bayern Munich in the same city back in 1999.
On the women's side, the 2028 Champions League final will be staged at Parc Olympic Lyonnais, home of one of the competition's most successful clubs, before the tournament heads to Cardiff the following year.
UEFA also outlined plans for its other major European finals during the same period. The Europa League final will be held at Bucharest's National Arena in 2028, before moving to Belgrade's National Stadium in 2029. The Conference League, meanwhile, will see Turin's Juventus Stadium host the 2028 final, followed by Budapest's Puskás Aréna in 2029.
Additionally, the UEFA Super Cup has been allocated to Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena in 2027, before switching to Astana's Astana Arena the following year.
With Cardiff set to welcome Europe's best women's teams in 2029, the city adds another prestigious fixture to its growing list of major sporting occasions, further cementing Wales' role as a host nation for elite football events.
