Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has taken notice of James Scanlon in the buildup to the Gunners' Carabao Cup fixture against Ipswich Town, with the 19-year-old winger having quickly made an impression since arriving at the club over the summer.
Scanlon completed a free transfer move to Arsenal from Manchester United, with the deal reportedly including a 40% sell-on clause for United should he move on in the future. The switch represented part of Arsenal's broader strategy of strengthening its academy ranks with promising young talent.
Born in Leicester, Scanlon represents Gibraltar at senior international level through his mother's heritage and has already earned 24 caps for the nation. He holds a notable piece of history, having become the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Nations League history at 17 years and 346 days when he found the net in a 2-2 draw against Liechtenstein back in September 2024.
Scanlon's development path has taken him through several clubs. He began in Derby County's academy system before joining Manchester United in February 2021, where he progressed rapidly through the youth ranks, breaking into the U18 squad within a year of signing. The 2023-24 campaign proved pivotal for the winger, as he featured in the UEFA Youth League, made U21 appearances, trained with the senior squad under then-manager Erik ten Hag, and signed his first professional contract in May 2024.
Despite being named in a Manchester United first-team matchday squad for a Europa League match against Real Sociedad in March 2025, Scanlon never made his senior debut for the club. He subsequently spent the second half of last season on loan at Swindon Town, turning down interest from several European clubs to join the League Two side. He scored once in six appearances as Swindon finished ninth in the table, narrowly missing out on the play-offs by a single point.
Since joining Arsenal, Scanlon has hit the ground running at U21 level. He opened his account by cutting in from the left flank against Brighton and curling a finish into the far corner, then followed that up with another goal against Chelsea the following weekend, giving him two goals in as many appearances for the club's development side.
The winger, who is capable of playing on either flank or in a more central attacking midfield role, has been training with Arsenal's first team this week as part of preparations for the Ipswich clash, fueling speculation that he could be included in Arteta's matchday squad.
While Arsenal's U21 side is also in action on Tuesday night, facing Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy, Scanlon's involvement with the senior setup this week suggests Arteta may be considering him for a place on the bench. Fellow academy prospects Max Dowman and Marli Salmon are expected to be included in the squad regardless, and with a wealth of options at his disposal, Arteta may not need to lean heavily on youth to fill out his matchday group.
However, should the Arsenal boss decide to rest some of his more established first-team players ahead of a busy fixture schedule, Scanlon could be handed an opportunity to make his senior debut for the club, capping off what has already been an eventful start to his time in north London.
