From Maltese Obscurity to the Premier League: The Remarkable Rise of Promise David

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Leeds United

For most of his career, Promise David was a name known only to his family, teammates and a handful of coaches scattered across three continents. Today, the Canadian striker finds himself on the books of Brighton & Hove Albion, on loan from Belgian champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, in what could become one of the most expensive transfers involving a Canadian player if made permanent.

David's path to the Premier League has been anything but conventional. Born Promise Oluwatobi Emmanuel David Akinpelu in Brampton, Ontario, he was released from Toronto FC's academy at just 15 years old. He struggled to attract interest from NCAA college programs, eventually earning only a partial scholarship offer from Appalachian State University.

Instead, David's career took him on an unlikely global tour. A talent showcase in Toronto led to an invitation to train with Croatian second-tier club NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac, but the offer collapsed when club president Niko Tokic Kartelo was removed from his post shortly after David arrived in Zagreb. Kartelo took the young striker into his own home rather than leave him stranded abroad.
