Hull City forward Oli McBurnie has earned a recall to the Scotland squad for the first time in five years, headlining a list that includes seven uncapped players as new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli named his first selection since taking over from Steve Clarke.
McBurnie, 30, last played for his country in 2021 having made his debut back in 2018, accumulating 16 caps without finding the net for the national side. Despite his scoreless record, he holds a memorable place in Scotland folklore for converting a penalty in the shootout that secured qualification for the delayed Euro 2020 finals.
Among the uncapped names handed their first call-up are Brondby defender Luis Binks, Celtic's Colby Donovan, goalkeeper Jon McCracken of Bradford City, winger Josh McPake and defender Stephen Welsh. Stoke City defender Luke Graham and Sevilla forward Robbie Ure also received their maiden senior call-ups, as widely anticipated.
Binks, 25, previously represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Scotland, while 20-year-old Donovan has impressed this season deputising for the injured Canada international Alistair Johnston at right-back for Celtic. Both Binks and Donovan have prior experience with Scotland's under-19 and under-21 sides, as has McBurnie.
Graham's rise has been one of the highlights of the domestic season. The 22-year-old, who has three caps at under-21 level, was part of Scotland's pre-World Cup training camp in May and sat on the bench during the farewell friendly win over Curacao that marked Clarke's final match in charge at Hampden Park. His form for Dundee last season, where he claimed both the club's players' player and young player of the year awards, has continued into this campaign with Stoke, where he has remained an ever-present figure as the Championship side go unbeaten in their last four outings.
Goalkeeper Scott Bain, who already has four caps, returns alongside McCracken, both having previously been included in squads under Clarke. Hearts duo Josh McPake and James Wilson, the latter with two caps to his name, have also been rewarded for strong starts to the season at Tynecastle. Hearts boss Wouter Vrancken, a compatriot of Pocognoli, had earlier expressed confidence that some of his players would feature in the new coach's plans, though winger Calvin Miller was left out.
Swansea City's Stephen Welsh could win his first senior cap, while Sassuolo striker Kieron Bowie, left-back Josh Doig and Udinese midfielder Lennon Miller have all been recalled to the fold.
Perhaps the most eye-catching inclusion is Robbie Ure, the 22-year-old who left the Rangers academy before enjoying a prolific spell with Sirius in Sweden. Ure scored 20 goals and provided three assists in 20 appearances as Sirius topped the table, form that prompted a £5.5m move to Sevilla in the summer. Although he has yet to score in La Liga, his eligibility to represent Ukraine appears to have accelerated Pocognoli's desire to secure his international future with Scotland.
Che Adams and Calvin Miller are among the notable absentees from the squad as Pocognoli begins to stamp his own identity on the national team following Clarke's departure.
