With Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League fast approaching, managers face a host of tricky calls, from chip strategy to captaincy choices and personnel decisions involving Manchester City's revamped squad.
One of the headline questions is whether to deploy a Wildcard or Free Hit chip this week. For those without Erling Haaland (£15.5m), a Wildcard offers a simpler route into owning the game's most expensive asset without sacrificing multiple transfers. It also allows managers to overhaul their squad value and load up on both Manchester City and Chelsea, who have favourable upcoming fixtures against Coventry and Hull at home respectively. Alternatively, the Free Hit chip presents its own appeal, letting managers sidestep the tough Arsenal versus Chelsea fixture in favour of assets from Brighton, Newcastle, and Brentford for a single gameweek.
For those not using a chip this week, Haaland emerges as the standout Triple Captain option. Coventry have shown defensive frailties, and City looked sharp in their last outing, with Haaland having enjoyed a clear week of rest before the Etihad Stadium clash on Saturday. Looking further ahead, City also face Ipswich in Gameweek 7 and Hull in Gameweek 16, though both fall during a period of Champions League fixture congestion. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) has a tempting matchup against Coventry in Gameweek 14, but that too arrives amid a demanding run of three games in seven days.
Manchester City's midfield options are also generating plenty of discussion. Rayan Cherki (£7.7m), the most-purchased player this week and already the subject of two price rises, stands out as the top midfield pick following an impressive recent performance. Phil Foden (£7.0m) is another strong contender, boasting better underlying statistics than Cherki across the opening two matches, while Elliot Anderson (£6.4m) is viewed as a sound long-term investment. The debate between Fernandes and Chelsea's Cole Palmer (£9.6m) or Arsenal's Bukayo Saka (£9.5m) also continues. Fernandes ticks nearly every box for an ideal FPL asset — he takes set-pieces, avoids injuries, is rarely substituted, and scores consistently. Managers who don't plan to captain Fernandes in the near future but would hand the armband to Palmer or Saka should consider making the switch, especially given the depth of viable options at both Chelsea and Arsenal compared to Fernandes' relative isolation as United's standout asset.
Finally, managers are urged to exercise patience with late transfer-window arrivals. New signings such as Daniel Munoz (£5.4m), Bradley Barcola (£8.0m), and Jack Grealish (£6.5m) are unlikely to start immediately and may only feature as substitutes initially.
