The Premier League's summer transfer window may have closed, but plenty of intrigue remains around clubs still working the margins of the market, with several major storylines developing on deadline day and beyond.
Chelsea endured one of the most eventful send-offs to the window, agreeing to sell midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a deal worth £125million, a fee that equals the British transfer record. The Blues had lined up Monaco's Lamine Camara as a like-for-like replacement, but that deal collapsed when the French club withdrew from negotiations. Attention has since turned to Atletico Madrid's Pablo Barrios, with reports suggesting Chelsea could table an offer worth around €100million for the Spain international when the window reopens in January. Manager Xabi Alonso is said to regard the 23-year-old as an ideal fit to fill the void left by Fernandez, and the west London club are expected to test Atletico's resolve with a serious bid in the New Year.
Elsewhere, Chelsea also came close to landing another midfielder before the deadline. According to reporter Santi Aouna, the club had reached a verbal agreement with AS Roma over a move for Manu Kone, with the respective club owners directly involved in discussions. However, the Italian side ran out of time to identify a suitable replacement, and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini ultimately blocked the departure, ending Chelsea's hopes of a deal.
At Tottenham, the focus has shifted to Richarlison's future. The Brazilian forward, who turned down a proposed switch to Everton worth an initial £25million after failing to agree personal terms, has been left with few options after being left out of Spurs' Premier League squad. He is now negotiating a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, where he would link up with Mohamed Salah. Personal terms are reportedly already in place, with the two clubs discussing a transfer fee before Turkey's window shuts at midnight local time — 10pm in the UK. Trabzonspor are looking to bolster their squad after a shaky start to the season, having collected just four points from three league games and suffering a 5-0 aggregate defeat to Ferencvaros in Europa League qualifying.
At Arsenal, Deadline Day proved relatively quiet on the incoming front, though the club did complete the sale of Gabriel Martinelli to Saudi Arabia, while defender Andria Bartishvili underwent a medical. The Gunners had made a late push for Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez after missing out on Julian Alvarez, but Inter refused to engage in talks over their captain. Away from the transfer market, Chelsea's women's team confirmed that Erin Cuthbert has been appointed as the new club captain for the 2026/27 season, taking over from Millie Bright following her retirement.
