Coventry City have made a statement of intent ahead of their return to the Premier League by completing the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in a deal that becomes the club's most expensive ever.
The 20-year-old arrives from Danish outfit Nordsjaelland for a reported fee of 27 million euros (£23.1m), which could rise by a further 3 million euros (£2.5m) depending on add-ons. Yirenkyi has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The move represents a significant financial commitment from Coventry, who under manager Frank Lampard secured promotion back to English football's top tier after a 25-year absence. Yirenkyi is the fifth new face to join the Sky Blues this summer as Lampard continues to reshape his squad for the challenges of Premier League football.
Yirenkyi is a graduate of the renowned Right to Dream academy, a pathway that has produced numerous talents for European football. He made the switch to Nordsjaelland in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the brightest young players in Danish football, earning the Superliga's young player of the year accolade last season.
His rise has not been confined to club level. Yirenkyi earned his first cap for Ghana's senior national team in May 2025 and went on to be included in the Black Stars squad for this summer's World Cup. He announced himself on the international stage with a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama, a goal that proved decisive in Ghana's group-stage victory at the tournament.
While predominantly deployed in midfield, Yirenkyi has shown considerable tactical flexibility throughout his career, having also featured at right-back for both club and country. That adaptability is expected to be a valuable asset for Lampard as he looks to navigate a demanding Premier League campaign with a squad still adjusting to the step up in quality.
