Arsenal made the fastest possible start to the new English football season, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring inside 24 seconds to give the Premier League champions a 1-0 lead over Manchester City in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The traditional curtain-raiser was moved from its usual Wembley home due to a series of concerts, but the change of venue did nothing to dampen Arsenal's intensity. From kickoff, the ball was worked from Martin Odegaard through Calafiori to new signing Christos Tzolis, who combined with Noni Madueke before the move found its way to Myles Lewis-Skelly. The young left-back, deployed further forward with Calafiori pushed into a more advanced role, spotted a gap and threaded a precise pass through City's defense. Calafiori arrived at the perfect moment to finish coolly past Gianluigi Donnarumma, sparking wild celebrations among the Arsenal players and supporters inside the stadium.
The goal set the tone for a first half in which Arsenal largely dictated proceedings. Mikel Arteta's side pressed high and forced City into uncomfortable moments in possession, with the visitors retreating toward Donnarumma on several occasions as they tried to regain composure after the early setback. Ben White produced a smart defensive intervention to deny Jeremy Doku down the left, while Arsenal continued to look the more threatening side going forward.
City gradually found their footing as the half progressed. Phil Foden tested David Raya with a curling effort from 25 yards after Antoine Semenyo picked him out in space, only for the Arsenal goalkeeper to produce an excellent diving save. Doku also caused problems on the left, beating White on the edge of the box before Gabriel recovered to concede a corner, which was well dealt with by Raya.
Arsenal's defensive organization impressed throughout the opening exchanges, with City struggling to create clear openings despite enjoying spells of possession in midfield. New Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, signed for £75m from Newcastle, made his debut alongside fellow new arrivals Tzolis and Cristhian Mosquera, who deputized for the injured William Saliba at center-back.
For Manchester City, the match marked the first competitive outing under new manager Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola's decade-long reign. Elliot Anderson, signed from Newcastle, also made his City debut, while Foden started and Jack Grealish returned to the bench after a season on loan at Everton. City were forced into a late change before kickoff when Matheus Nunes was injured in the warmup, with Vitor Reis coming into the squad as a replacement.
