Barcelona have called off a scheduled pre-season friendly in Morocco, citing the sensitive situation surrounding the migrant crisis at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta as the driving factor behind the decision.
The Spanish champions had been due to travel to north-western Morocco to take on local club Ittihad Riadi Tangier on 15 August, a fixture that formed part of their preparations for the upcoming season. However, the club confirmed in an official statement that the match would no longer go ahead, explaining that current conditions made it an unsuitable time to play.
"In light of the current uncertainty and circumstances, FC Barcelona considers playing the match would be inappropriate," the club said, though it stopped short of directly naming the crisis at Ceuta as the reason. Sources close to the situation, however, indicate the cancellation is closely tied to the unfolding events on the Spanish-Moroccan border.
The crisis erupted after roughly 78,000 migrants attempted to cross into Ceuta from Morocco by sea in the space of a week, a mass movement that resulted in around 100 fatalities and triggered a wave of political tension across the European Union. Ceuta, a Spanish territory located on the North African coastline, shares open-border arrangements with other EU states under the Schengen system, and the scale of the crossing prompted immediate diplomatic friction.
Most of the migrants who entered Ceuta have since been returned to Morocco, though estimates suggest between 3,000 and 5,000 people remain in the territory. The episode has had ripple effects well beyond Spain's borders. Italy moved to suspend its Schengen arrangement with Spain in response, a stance that received backing from Finland and Denmark. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic went further, calling for Spain's Schengen membership to be temporarily suspended altogether.
Against this politically charged backdrop, Barcelona opted to withdraw from the Morocco fixture rather than proceed with a match that could have been perceived as tone-deaf given the humanitarian and diplomatic fallout. This is not the only friendly the club has scrapped in recent weeks. A planned match against Preston North End was also cancelled following Barcelona's pre-season training stint in England, during which they did fulfil a fixture against Birmingham City.
Despite the disruption to their friendly schedule, Barcelona's broader pre-season plans remain largely intact. Hansi Flick's squad are set to face Nottingham Forest this coming Saturday in the Italian city of Udine, continuing their preparations on the continent. They will then return to Camp Nou territory to host Egyptian side Al Ahly on 19 August in what is expected to be one of their final tune-up matches before the competitive season begins.
The club's La Liga title defence is scheduled to kick off on 23 August against Elche, giving Flick and his players a clear timeline to finalise their preparations despite the altered friendly calendar. While the cancellations in Morocco and against Preston North End represent a disruption to the club's original pre-season itinerary, Barcelona's football activities elsewhere continue as planned, with the fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Al Ahly serving as the primary remaining tests before the new campaign gets under way.
The situation in Ceuta remains a point of significant diplomatic sensitivity within the EU, and Barcelona's decision reflects the wider caution being exercised by organisations and institutions with ties to the region amid the ongoing uncertainty.
