Mykhailo Mudryk made his first appearance for Chelsea in nearly 20 months on Wednesday, coming off the bench during a pre-season friendly against Juventus, marking a significant step in the winger's return to competitive football following a lengthy doping suspension.
The Ukrainian international had not featured for the Blues since November 2024, when he netted in a Conference League victory over Heidenheim. Just days after that goal, Mudryk was provisionally suspended after failing a drugs test for the banned substance meldonium. What followed was an extended process as the 25-year-old sought to clear his name, a saga that concluded last week when the Football Association confirmed he was free to resume playing.
With the suspension lifted, Mudryk wasted no time rejoining his teammates, traveling to Hong Kong to link up with Chelsea's squad during their pre-season tour of Asia. He was not alone in making the trip, as new arrival Danny Welbeck also joined the group and was handed a start against Juventus.
Mudryk entered the match in the 82nd minute, sporting the No. 43 shirt, as he replaced striker Nicolas Jackson. Jackson himself had only come on at the interval but had made a strong impression before making way for the returning winger.
While Mudryk is back in training and now available for selection, his long-term future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain. There has been speculation that Chelsea could explore a loan move for the player as the club assesses his best path forward following such a disruptive period away from the game.
Manager Xabi Alonso addressed the situation prior to the Juventus fixture, making clear that no final decision had been reached regarding Mudryk's role going forward. "No decision has been made. Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of a team, and we need to assess [how he is doing]," Alonso said. The Spanish coach also acknowledged the unique circumstances surrounding the winger, adding: "But for sure, he's a special player. It's a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive."
Mudryk arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk in a transfer that could rise to £89 million, one of the most expensive deals in the club's history at the time. Since then, his output has been modest relative to that price tag, with the forward managing 10 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions. Despite the turbulence of the past year and a half, he still has five years remaining on his contract with the west London club.
For now, Chelsea appear to be treating Mudryk's reintegration cautiously, prioritizing his wellbeing and adaptation back into the squad's rhythm rather than rushing him into a prominent role. How he performs during the remainder of pre-season, including further minutes on the Asia tour, could offer clearer signals about whether he features prominently for Alonso's side or is sent elsewhere on loan to rebuild his form and confidence away from the intense scrutiny at Stamford Bridge.
