Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a provisional suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his decision to leave the national team's training camp last month, the governing body has confirmed.
The 41-year-old, who captains Portugal, departed the Nations League squad in September after a frustrating spell on the periphery of the team. He had been an unused substitute in the match against Norway before learning he would once again be left out of the starting lineup for the following fixture against Denmark. That revelation prompted him to exit the camp.
According to the FPF, the provisional suspension was formally issued on 9 October, with the federation describing the matter as an "urgent" case requiring swift resolution. Under FPF regulations, any player who abandons or fails to report for international duty can face a suspension ranging from one to six months, in addition to a financial penalty.
Explaining his actions at the time, the Al-Nassr forward issued a detailed statement in which he accused national team coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word to him on two separate occasions, calling it an "absolute breach of trust." Despite the strength of his criticism, Ronaldo acknowledged his own responsibility for the episode, offering an apology to both his teammates and Portugal's supporters. He admitted that some form of punishment was warranted given the circumstances.
FPF president Pedro Proenca struck a conciliatory tone when addressing the situation, telling Portuguese outlet Record that the federation was working through the matter collaboratively. "This is a time for calm and composure. We are all sitting down together at the table," Proenca said. "There is a strong desire to have our captain back with us. There will be a normal disciplinary process."
Despite the turbulence surrounding his international future, Ronaldo has made clear he has no intention of stepping away from the national team. The forward, who reportedly weighed up retirement from international football after this summer's World Cup, ultimately chose to continue representing his country. Central to that decision is his pursuit of a landmark personal milestone — 1,000 career goals — a target that remains within reach as he continues playing at the highest level.
Ronaldo's standing in the history of the Portuguese national team is unrivaled. He has netted 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country, both figures representing men's world records. His contributions were instrumental in Portugal's triumphs at Euro 2016 and in back-to-back Nations League titles.
The suspension comes despite his continued productivity at club level. Just last week, Ronaldo found the net for Al-Nassr in a 3-0 victory over Diriyah Club, a goal that marked the 980th of his storied career and underlined that, even past the age of 41, his scoring instincts remain sharp.
The disciplinary process initiated by the FPF is expected to determine the length of any formal ban Ronaldo may serve, though both the federation's leadership and the player himself have signaled a desire to resolve the matter amicably and see him return to the fold as Portugal's captain.
