Bentancur Sees Red in Fiery Draw as Tottenham Escape Old Trafford With a Point

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Ipswich Town

Tottenham Hotspur's miserable start to the Premier League season continued with another chaotic afternoon, though a late leveller at Old Trafford against Manchester United at least spared them from a seventh defeat.

Arriving at Old Trafford without a win in the league and anchored to the bottom of the table, Spurs looked to have more than enough opportunities to change their fortunes. Despite fashioning several chances throughout the contest, they could not find a way past United's defence in the first half, and their frustration grew as the match wore on.

The deadlock was broken with just over 15 minutes remaining when Bryan Mbeumo fired Manchester United into a 1-0 lead, piling further misery on a Tottenham side already toiling near the foot of the table.

Tensions, already simmering from a physical contest, boiled over shortly afterward. United left-back Luke Shaw had been on the receiving end of two heavy challenges — one from himself and another involving Casemiro's teammate Matheus Cunha — and reacted by shoving his opposite number. Rodrigo Bentancur responded in the worst possible way, headbutting Shaw as the confrontation escalated into a full-scale scuffle involving players from both sides, with Tosin Adarabioyo among those attempting to separate the warring factions.

When the dust settled, referee officials deemed Bentancur's reaction worthy of a straight red card for violent conduct, leaving Tottenham to play out the remainder of the match with ten men. Shaw, despite his role in instigating the flashpoint, was shown only a yellow card, as was Brighton loanee Jan Paul van Hecke, who was also booked in the aftermath.

Speaking on Sky Sports during the broadcast, pundit Gary Neville criticized the Uruguayan midfielder's loss of composure, saying: "The lack of discipline at this stage of the game for Roberto De Zerbi is just not what he needs."

With Tottenham reduced to ten men and trailing by a goal, the outlook appeared bleak for De Zerbi's side, who seemed destined for yet another defeat that would have compounded their early-season struggles. However, Dominic Solanke stepped up in the closing stages to snatch an equaliser, rescuing a point that proved crucial for Tottenham's position in the standings.

The 1-1 draw was not enough to lift Spurs out of the relegation zone, but it did move them off the absolute bottom of the table. The point takes Tottenham up to 18th place, now ahead of Coventry on goal difference, and one point clear of Fulham, who dropped into the bottom spot following their own defeat away at Ipswich.

For Manchester United, the result will be viewed as two points dropped having led for a significant portion of the second half, while for Tottenham, the late goal offers a small measure of relief after a red card and a goal conceded threatened to turn the afternoon into a complete disaster. De Zerbi will nonetheless need to address the discipline issues that contributed to Bentancur's dismissal as his side looks to climb away from the drop zone in the coming weeks.
