Arsenal returned from the international break with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, with substitute Bruno Guimaraes once again proving to be the difference off the bench.
The Gunners looked sluggish after the three-week hiatus and fell behind shortly after half-time when James Justin finished off a slick move, latching onto an excellent cross from Gabriel Gudmundsson to beat David Raya. It was a well-worked goal that capped a bright opening to the second period for the visitors, who had threatened throughout with Jayden Bogle and Noah Okafor both going close earlier in the match.
Arsenal, missing some of their usual sharpness, struggled to find rhythm in the final third for large stretches. Kai Havertz, starting despite carrying a hamstring concern from international duty, never appeared to reach full speed and was repeatedly caught offside. Bukayo Saka also endured a frustrating afternoon, failing to convert his early promise into clear chances.
However, the hosts responded well to going behind. Riccardo Calafiori, deployed at left-back, pulled Arsenal level after Ben White's header across goal found him in space to poke home from close range. It was a reward for Calafiori's attacking instincts throughout the game, as the Italian consistently pushed forward to support the likes of Noni Madueke and Saka.
Madueke, handed a rare start on the left wing in place of the injured Christos Tzolis, impressed with his movement and delivery, including the cross that led to the equaliser. Manager Mikel Arteta's decision to trust the England international appeared vindicated by a lively overall display.
The winning goal arrived courtesy of Guimaraes, who had been introduced for Myles Lewis-Skelly on 63 minutes. The Brazilian immediately injected tempo and purpose into Arsenal's play. Declan Rice, who had also struggled to impose himself before the break, produced a clever flicked pass to release Guimaraes, who drilled a fine finish from the edge of the box past goalkeeper James Trafford. It mirrored a similar impact substitute appearance he made earlier in the season against Sunderland, where he also came off the bench to score the decisive goal.
Defensively, Ezri Konsa was a standout performer for Arsenal despite having been an injury doubt before kickoff. He battled well against Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and grew more assured as the match progressed. Gabriel, playing alongside him, had a less convincing outing, including a vital last-ditch block to deny Justin a potential second goal on the line.
Leeds pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, bringing on Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson in search of fresh legs, but could not find a way through. Piero Hincapie, who replaced Calafiori late on, made a crucial clearance in the six-yard box to preserve Arsenal's lead. Saka also had a late opportunity to seal the win but could not find the finish when clean through on goal.
In goal, Raya made important saves to deny both Bogle and Gudmundsson during the first half, though he could do nothing about the quality of the cross that led to Leeds' opener.
The result continues Arsenal's strong recent form, while Leeds will be left to reflect on a performance that showed real promise despite ultimately ending in defeat. Guimaraes, meanwhile, continues to stake his claim for more regular starting minutes given his repeated impact from the substitutes' bench.
