The Premier League returns from its lengthy international break with a notable clash at the Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal host an unbeaten Leeds United side eager to leapfrog the Gunners in the table with a rare win in north London.
Both managers face the challenge of preparing their squads after a disjointed few weeks, with many players only reuniting with their clubs in the days before kickoff following international commitments. Mikel Arteta has had limited time on the training ground with several first-team regulars, adding an extra layer of uncertainty to his selection.
There is, however, some encouraging news for the Arsenal boss. Ben White, Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and academy prospect Max Dowman have all been declared fit and are available for selection against Leeds. On the opposing side, Daniel Farke can also breathe a little easier, with goalkeeper James Trafford and forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin both returning unscathed from England duty and in contention to start.
Despite those positives, injury concerns remain significant for both clubs heading into the first Premier League fixture since the break.
Arsenal will definitely be missing William Saliba, who is nursing a back problem, along with winger Christos Tzolis, sidelined with a hamstring issue. Arteta is also facing late calls on Kai Havertz, who is dealing with a hamstring concern, and Ezri Konsa, who picked up a dead leg. Both will be assessed before the manager finalizes his matchday squad.
There was better news regarding Declan Rice, who withdrew from the England squad's Nations League fixtures as a precaution. Arteta expressed optimism over the midfielder's availability, while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding others. "It was the sensible thing to do, and hopefully tomorrow he's available but some others are in doubt," Arteta said, referring to Rice's withdrawal from international duty and the broader injury picture facing his squad.
For Leeds, the international break has not been kind either. Farke confirmed that winger Daniel James suffered a back injury while away with his national team and will not be involved against Arsenal. He joins defender Joe Rodon, who is nursing a thigh problem, and forward Mateo Joseph, who is sidelined with an ACL injury, on the list of confirmed absentees.
There is some positive news from the Leeds camp, though, as summer additions Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Harry Wilson look set to be available. Bahoya has been managing an ankle issue while Wilson has been nursing a muscle problem, but both have taken part in training and are in contention to feature at the Emirates.
With so many fitness doubts hanging over both camps, the composition of each starting lineup remains difficult to predict ahead of kickoff. Arteta in particular will likely wait until close to matchday to finalize his squad, given the late medical assessments required for Havertz, Konsa and Rice.
For Leeds, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season would represent a significant statement of intent, particularly given the disruption caused by the international break and the injuries to James, Rodon and Joseph. Farke will be hoping his squad depth, bolstered by the returns of Trafford and Calvert-Lewin, proves sufficient to challenge Arsenal on their own turf.
