England Cruise to 3-1 Win Over Greece in Women's World Cup Playoff Opener

England took a commanding first-leg advantage in their Women's World Cup playoff semi-final against Greece, winning 3-1 in Crete to put themselves in control of the tie ahead of Tuesday's return fixture.

The Lionesses settled into a comfortable rhythm early on, though they initially struggled to convert their possession into clear-cut opportunities. Lauren James saw a goal chalked off, and Lauren Hemp fired narrowly wide as England probed for a breakthrough. Greece's best moment of the opening period came when Ioanna Papatheodorou embarked on a remarkable solo run from inside her own half, beating several defenders before unleashing a chipped effort from 22 yards that crashed against the crossbar.

England eventually found the breakthrough in the 39th minute through a slick passing move. Keira Walsh threaded a pass to Georgia Stanway, who laid it off to Laura Blindkilde Brown before the ball found its way to Alessia Russo. Russo's clever cushioned pass set up Stanway to finish first-time past goalkeeper Petaloti, giving England a deserved 1-0 lead at the break.

The second half began cagily, with England failing to add to their advantage despite spells of pressure. Beth Mead was introduced at half-time in place of Blindkilde Brown, and her impact soon became evident as the match opened up in the closing stages.

In the 63rd minute, England doubled their lead through a stunning individual effort. Walsh received the ball 25 yards from goal, created space, and found Maya Le Tissier on the right side of the box. Le Tissier controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful drive that Petaloti could only parry into her own net, giving the defender her first international goal.

Four minutes later, Russo got in on the scoring herself. After combining with Mead on the right flank, she received a return pass and calmly turned before slotting a low finish beyond Petaloti to make it 3-0, effectively ending the contest as a competitive affair.

Greece did manage to find some consolation in the 77th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Kallisti Brouksair. After Esme Morgan allowed a long ball to bounce awkwardly, Papatheodorou picked out Brouksair, who beat her marker Leah Williamson with a clever stepover before driving a firm left-footed shot into the far corner to reduce the deficit.

England had further chances to extend their lead in the closing stages. Jess Park, who had replaced the impressive Russo, struck the underside of the crossbar in stoppage time, though the effort would have been ruled out for offside in any case. Mead also came close in the final moments, turning a cross from Hemp wide of goal, though she too was flagged offside.

The match saw England make several substitutions late on, including the international debuts of both Erica Meg Parkinson, aged 18, and 28-year-old Grace Fisk, who came on in stoppage time.

With a two-goal cushion heading into the second leg, England will be strong favorites to progress to the final playoff round, where they are likely to face Ukraine. The Ukrainians secured their own impressive result on the same night, defeating Slovakia 3-1 away from home in their semi-final first leg.

The second leg between England and Greece is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, with the Lionesses needing only to avoid a heavy defeat to secure their passage through to the next stage of qualification.
