Chelsea Set to Welcome Back Five Key Players for Bournemouth Clash

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Chelsea

Chelsea have received a timely boost ahead of their Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, with manager Xabi Alonso confirming that five players sidelined through injury are now fit and available for selection.

The Spanish head coach revealed that Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Reece James, Joao Pedro and young full-back Marco Palestra have all returned to full training and are ready to feature when Chelsea host the Cherries at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

The fixture marks Chelsea's return to action after a lengthy 22-day gap enforced by the extended international break, their last outing having been a disappointing 3-0 loss on the road against Brentford. That defeat had come with Chelsea already missing key personnel, with Caicedo nursing a calf problem and James struggling with a hamstring issue, both of which left Alonso short of options in midfield during that period.

Alonso used his pre-match press duties to update reporters on the fitness situation across his squad, confirming that the extended break away from competitive fixtures had proven beneficial in allowing his injured and fatigued players time to recover.

Discussing Caicedo's recovery specifically, Alonso said: "Yes. He is ready to go. We have used the time with Moi to be back fit. He has been training well. He is okay to go."

The Chelsea boss also addressed the return of Palmer, James and Joao Pedro, explaining that each player had been working their way back into full training over the past week, albeit at different stages of their respective recoveries. "They've trained the last week, some of them longer than others. Marco Palestra as well. Now they have trained well and are ready to go. They are key players," Alonso said.

The manager struck an optimistic tone regarding the medium-term availability of his returning stars, suggesting supporters could expect to see the quintet feature regularly moving forward. "Until the next international break, hopefully they are going to be available. For tomorrow, they will be good," he added.

Particular attention was paid to Palmer's situation, with the England international having looked visibly below his best during the defeat to Brentford prior to the break. Alonso stressed that full fitness and enjoyment of his football remain the priorities for the attacking midfielder going forward.

"What is most important for Cole is that he is fully fit, enjoying his game and is OK. Against Brentford we could see he was struggling. For the next part," Alonso explained.

The Chelsea manager also offered some insight into the thinking behind team selection decisions during the recent run of fixtures, acknowledging that there had been a deliberate choice not to risk Palmer against Brentford given his evident struggles. However, he admitted that a similar gamble taken in an earlier match against Brighton had not paid off. "We didn't want to take risks against Brentford, but we did against Brighton and I said [that was a mistake]," Alonso conceded.

With five important squad members now cleared to play, Alonso looks set to have considerably more strength in depth to call upon against Bournemouth than was the case in the weeks leading up to the international break. The return of Caicedo and James in particular should provide a significant lift to Chelsea's engine room, an area that had been notably weakened during their absence.

Alonso's comments suggest a sense of relief within the Chelsea camp that the timing of the international break allowed for recovery rather than further disruption, setting up what the manager hopes will be a stronger and more settled squad as the season progresses.
