Laos International Arrested Amid Match-Fixing Investigation at Asean Championship

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Championship Internazionale

A player who represented Laos at the 2026 Asean Championship has been taken into custody as part of a probe into suspected match-fixing linked to a gambling syndicate, the Guardian has established.

Soukphachan Lueanthala, a winger with domestic club Salavan United, is alleged to have played a coordinating role in the scheme, reportedly acting as a go-between for other squad members on behalf of a betting operation believed to be based in Vietnam. The claims have not been officially confirmed by either the Laos Football Federation (LFF) or the national police, though sources indicate the player remains detained.

The arrest followed a string of heavy defeats for Laos during the tournament, which raised suspicions among federation officials. The team lost 5-0 to Thailand, 4-0 to Malaysia and 4-1 to the Philippines in the group stage before a final 7-2 defeat to Myanmar. It was after returning from that match that several squad members were reportedly questioned by police.

The LFF issued a statement on 7 August confirming it had launched an internal investigation before handing the matter over to law enforcement. A source familiar with the case, speaking anonymously, said Lueanthala was suspected of directing teammates and serving as a liaison for those allegedly involved in manipulating results.

The tournament outcome marked a stark decline from Laos' performance two years earlier under coach Vladica Grujic, a Serbian who has overseen the national side through this cycle. In the previous edition, Laos had managed surprise draws against higher-ranked Indonesia and the Philippines while scoring seven goals and conceding 11 across four matches. This year's results suggested a team far removed from that level of competitiveness, fueling concerns that results were being influenced outside the pitch.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) was approached for comment regarding the allegations and whether it was cooperating with authorities in Laos, but did not respond. The LFF likewise did not answer requests for further comment.

This is not the first time Laos football has been embroiled in match-fixing controversy. In 2020, the AFC handed a lifetime ban to Thipphonexay Inthavongsa after he was found guilty of conspiring to fix the outcome of a 2017 international fixture against Hong Kong.

According to a source with deep knowledge of the Lao game, manipulation of results has been a persistent issue affecting both players and, potentially, officials over an extended period. Financial vulnerability among national team members has reportedly made them easy targets for recruitment into such schemes.

"Until last year, they were getting $10 per day when they were joining the national team," the source said, describing the meagre conditions faced by players called up to represent their country.

The source also claimed that one player had admitted to fixing three separate matches, receiving $10,000 for each instance. He suggested the pattern of suspected corruption has had a broader corrosive effect on the sport in Laos, pushing experienced internationals out of the squad and replacing them with less experienced players.

"There is such talent," the source said of the country's footballing prospects. "They deserve so much better than this."

The investigation into Lueanthala's alleged involvement continues, with authorities yet to disclose further details about the scope of the inquiry or whether additional players or officials may face scrutiny.
