Cristiano Ronaldo has released an extensive public statement outlining what he claims was a pre-agreed set of talking points that Portugal coach Jorge Jesus was supposed to address at a press conference ahead of the national team's match in Denmark last week, and his frustration that those points were not delivered as promised.
According to Ronaldo, the arrangement stemmed from a video call that included himself, Jesus, his adviser Tiago Craveiro, and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. Ronaldo said the meeting took place at Jesus's own request and that a written document summarizing eight specific points was subsequently handed to the coach, again at his request, for use in his media appearance.
The forward claims that Jesus's failure to raise these points publicly represented a second broken promise to him, prompting him to walk out of the national team's camp rather than risk a further breach of trust.
The dispute follows a separate incident in Norway, where Ronaldo warmed up at length during the match but was never brought on by Jesus. He was later criticized for not acknowledging Portugal's traveling supporters after the final whistle, a moment he addressed directly in his statement.
According to the points Ronaldo says he approved, Jesus was the one who first proposed a season-long plan for how Ronaldo would be used with the national team, describing their discussion as lengthy and productive. The document reportedly emphasized that Jesus recognized Ronaldo's enduring passion for playing for Portugal and his influence on the squad across 24 consecutive years of international football. It also stated that Ronaldo had accepted the plan without ever challenging the coach's decisions, conducting himself in an exemplary, loyal, and professional manner throughout.
Regarding the Norway match specifically, the notes indicate it was not originally part of the agreed plan, but that Jesus believed Ronaldo had recovered physically from the previous game and warned him he might be called upon, a scenario Ronaldo reportedly accepted in advance.
One of the more striking admissions attributed to Jesus in the document reads: "I made a mistake by putting someone of the stature of Pelé or Maradona on to warm up and then not putting him in the game. If it were today I would not do it."
The notes also reaffirm Jesus's desire to continue working with Ronaldo, stating plainly that he wants the forward in the national team, not just marginally but emphatically, and that the belief is mutual given their previous working relationship.
On the issue of not saluting supporters after the Norway game, the document addresses it directly: "Someone who has played more than 230 matches for the national team does not receive lessons from me on love for Portugal. It was a moment of frustration that erases nothing. He is the player who gives the most autographs, takes the most selfies, and shows the most affection to the fans. Let us not invent problems where they do not exist. When we are not happy we react."
Ronaldo was clear that nothing in the agreed notes required Jesus to apologize to him personally. However, he expressed dismay at the coach's demeanor during the actual press conference, saying he detected a tone and aggressiveness he felt was undeserved, especially given that no such attitude had been present when they spoke privately the day before.
"I heard expressions and an aggressiveness that I do not believe I deserved, an attitude of 'I want, I can and I command' that he never showed me, not even remotely, in private the day before," Ronaldo said.
The episode adds further tension to Ronaldo's ongoing relationship with the Portugal setup under Jesus, though the forward's own account suggests the coach had expressed continued commitment to including him in the squad going forward.
