Bowie Shines as Scotland Beat North Macedonia in Skopje

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Serie A Internazionale

Josh Bowie made the most of his first extended run in a Scotland shirt, scoring a crucial goal as Sebastien Pocognoli's side defeated North Macedonia 2-0 away from home.

The striker, who plays his club football on loan at Sassuolo after spells with Raith Rovers and Hibernian, curled a superb finish past the North Macedonia goalkeeper to help secure the win. It was a welcome breakthrough for the 24-year-old, whose last competitive start for his country had been cut short after just 13 minutes following Jack Hendry's sending off in a defeat to Switzerland at Hampden Park.

Deployed as part of an attacking front pairing alongside Oli McBurnie, Bowie was given license to roam forward in Pocognoli's new 3-4-1-2 formation. The approach paid off handsomely, with the forward topping the match statistics across several categories. He registered seven shots overall, more than any other player on the pitch, with four of those attempts on target. He also led all players for shots taken inside the penalty area, with five, and made the most touches in the opposition's box, totalling 11.

Speaking after the match, Bowie reflected on the significance of scoring for his national team. "You play all your life to represent a country and to score a goal is just an unbelievable feeling," he said. He also credited the new head coach for giving him confidence and a platform to perform. "This manager's come in and he's put a lot of trust in me. I think the style that he wants to play definitely plays into my strengths. I think you've seen today a lot of times running them in behind and just showing strength against occupying defenders is one of the main things."

Bowie described his development under Pocognoli as part of a longer-term project, echoing language that has become common among the Scotland squad in recent days. "It's a process but I think everyone's enjoying that process and it's a bit of a change," he said.

Pocognoli, the Belgian now in charge of Scotland, is attempting to overhaul both tactics and mentality compared to his predecessor, while also integrating a number of new faces into the squad. Bowie pointed out that the extended nature of the current international window has helped that process along, giving players more time to absorb the new ideas even as fixture congestion eases slightly. "It's a lot longer international break," he explained. "We spend a lot more time together so it's good for him to get his message across and his ideas. Also, we play more games so we have to train a little bit less of course."

For Bowie personally, the change in coaching staff has offered a chance to reset perceptions. "I think for me it's a fresh start with a new coach and different ideas," he said, revealing that Pocognoli had told him directly he did not need to justify his inclusion. "He said to me 'you don't need to prove yourself, just go and do what I know you can do' and I feel like I'm just doing that."

The forward, who made his senior debut for Raith Rovers at just 16 years old, acknowledged that many Scotland supporters still associate him with his earlier years at Hibernian. However, he believes his move to Serie A has transformed him as a player. "I feel like since I moved to Serie A, it's a different challenge against more experienced players and at a higher level," Bowie said. "So, yeah, I feel like I've definitely kicked into another gear and I feel like I'm showing that."

With Pocognoli's methods beginning to bear fruit and Bowie seizing his opportunity in Skopje, Scotland will hope the forward's momentum continues as the squad looks to build on the win heading into their next fixtures.
