Lucas Bergvall has agreed a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur, drawing a line under months of transfer speculation that saw the Swedish midfielder push for an exit earlier this summer.
The 20-year-old, already tied to Spurs until 2031, has now extended his terms to 2032 and received a significant pay rise as part of the new deal. The move comes just three months after Bergvall informed the club of his desire to leave, frustrated by limited playing time under head coach Roberto De Zerbi following the Italian's arrival towards the end of last season.
Bergvall's stance attracted interest from several clubs. Nottingham Forest had a £38m bid rejected for the midfielder, while Newcastle, Aston Villa and Chelsea were also reported to be interested in securing his signature. Despite the suitors, Spurs stood firm and worked to convince their academy-style prospect that his long-term future lay in north London.
A turning point appears to have come through direct conversations with De Zerbi, who gave Bergvall regular minutes during pre-season and started him in Tottenham's Premier League opener away at Brentford. Since the start of the new campaign, however, Bergvall has featured for only 45 minutes in the league, underlining how significant it was for the club to reassure him over his role going forward.
Since arriving from Djurgarden in 2024, Bergvall has made 80 appearances for Tottenham, establishing himself as one of the club's most promising young talents. Speaking about his decision to commit his future to the club, Bergvall said: "I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract."
He added: "I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that. Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead."
De Zerbi, who back in July had described Bergvall as "a top, top, top player" while insisting he would not stand in the way of any player wanting to leave against their wishes, has since acknowledged mistakes in how he handled the midfielder's situation during a turbulent end to last season, when Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation.
Reflecting on Bergvall's decision to sign fresh terms, the Spurs boss praised the player's mentality and potential. "Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level," De Zerbi said. "Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better."
He continued: "I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential."
Tottenham's sporting director, Johan Lange, also welcomed the news, describing Bergvall as "an outstanding young player with enormous potential" and stating that the new contract reflects the club's belief in the midfielder both now and in the years to come.
With the speculation now resolved, attention turns to whether De Zerbi can find a consistent role for Bergvall as Tottenham look to build on last season's difficult campaign and push forward under the Italian's management.
