Chelsea have tied down Pedro Neto to a fresh long-term contract, recognising both his bright start to the season and his choice to remain at Stamford Bridge despite interest from elsewhere in the Premier League. The Portuguese winger, who attracted attention from several top-flight clubs including Manchester City over the summer, opted instead to continue his development under head coach Xabi Alonso.
Neto has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, which includes the option of a further twelve months, and will also see his wages increase. The 26-year-old has been deployed by Alonso in an advanced wingback role this season, contributing two goals in five appearances so far. Since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £54m transfer in 2024, Neto has racked up 40 goal involvements for the west London club, underlining his growing importance to the side.
His decision to commit his future to Chelsea places him among a group of key players who have recently agreed improved terms. João Pedro, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo have all signed upgraded contracts this year, while Cole Palmer put his signature to a new deal in 2024 and later reaffirmed his commitment to the club in comments made to the Guardian. Chelsea are reportedly set to confirm further contract renewals in the near future, continuing a pattern established under the club's ownership of handing out lengthy, incentive-based deals while still rewarding individual performance with pay rises along the way.
Neto's willingness to stay stands in sharp contrast to the situation involving Enzo Fernández, who completed a £125m move to Manchester City in the final hours of the transfer window. Unlike Neto, the Argentine midfielder was not offered a new contract despite preliminary talks having taken place. Tensions had been building since March, when Fernández publicly criticised the departure of former head coach Enzo Maresca and hinted at a desire to relocate to Madrid, fuelling speculation of interest from Real Madrid. Chelsea responded to his comments by suspending him for two matches.
While Real Madrid subsequently played down suggestions of a genuine pursuit, Fernández continued to signal his desire for a change of scenery. Manchester City, who had appointed Maresca as Pep Guardiola's successor, ultimately emerged as the most serious contender for his signature. Chelsea had been prepared to keep Fernández if their valuation was not met, but internally there was frustration that a senior member of the squad had not offered stronger leadership during a difficult campaign that saw the club finish tenth in the Premier League and miss out on European qualification.

Senior figures at Stamford Bridge ultimately concluded that Fernández's relationship with his teammates had deteriorated beyond repair following his public remarks. Fernández's representatives have been contacted for comment on the matter. Sources close to the club have rejected suggestions that Chelsea were pressured into sanctioning the sale, framing it instead as a considered long-term decision.
By contrast, Neto's fresh commitment is being viewed within the club as further proof that the current squad has bought into the project being built under Alonso, with those who demonstrate loyalty and strong performances continuing to be rewarded accordingly.
