Fenerbahce's Champions League campaign was overshadowed by off-field drama on Thursday night after head coach Ismail Kartal declared he was quitting following a 1-1 draw at home to Roma, only for club president Aziz Yildirim to insist minutes later that his manager would remain in charge.
The 65-year-old Kartal stunned reporters at his post-match press conference by stating he was leaving the club "never to return," explaining that he wanted "to clear the way for the club." His comments appeared to catch even his own players off guard, with English full-back Archie Brown reportedly left dumbfounded when he learned of the resignation after the final whistle.
However, Yildirim moved swiftly to contradict his coach, telling reporters that Kartal "continues in his role" at Fenerbahce. The president suggested the outburst stemmed from an ugly incident during the match rather than a genuine decision to walk away. "Some fans threw a bottle at the coach's head this evening during the game. He is upset about it," Yildirim said.
Yildirim added that he had spoken directly with Kartal after the game. "I just spoke to Ismail Kartal. He mentioned the bottle incident and he also complained about being under pressure," he said. When asked whether the coach himself had confirmed he would stay, Yildirim brushed aside the need for such reassurance. "There's no need for him to say that he'd continue. I am his senior, I told him to continue and that's it. We are a family," he said.
Kartal has a long history with Fenerbahce, having spent ten years at the club as a player before taking charge as head coach on four separate occasions — in 2014-15, on an interim basis in 2021-22, for a full season in 2023-24, and again since returning in June this year. He also served as assistant manager during two of the club's Turkish league title wins.
Despite the managerial uncertainty, Fenerbahce's on-field form has been a source of concern. The club has finished as Super Lig runners-up in each of the last five seasons and only recently reached the Champions League league phase for the first time in 18 years. Domestically, though, results have been shaky — Fenerbahce currently sit ninth in the Turkish top flight after losing two of their opening four league matches, including a 2-1 home defeat to Besiktas last Saturday.
The draw with Roma itself was a tightly contested affair. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Donyell Malen set up Bryan Cristante, who beat goalkeeper Ederson with a bouncing effort. Fenerbahce responded before the break through Brown, who finished coolly over goalkeeper Mile Svilar after being played through by Mason Greenwood.
Roma believed they had won a penalty in the 68th minute when Kerem Akturkoglu was penalized for a challenge on Paulo Dybala, but a VAR review determined the foul occurred outside the box, overturning the decision. Fenerbahce nearly snatched a dramatic late winner when defender Nathan Aké's header struck the crossbar.
With the draw, Fenerbahce's push through the Champions League league phase continues, with fixtures against Aston Villa away and Liverpool at home still to come. Whether Kartal remains at the helm for those matches — despite his president's insistence — remains a lingering question following one of the more bizarre post-match sagas of the European season.
