The Premier League has unveiled its festive fixture list, confirming that seven matches will take place on Boxing Day this year, marking a significant increase from the solitary game played on 26 December last season.
With Boxing Day falling on a Saturday in 2026, the league has spread the fixtures across four separate kick-off times to accommodate broadcast demands. Four of the seven games will kick off at the traditional 15:00 GMT slot, while the remaining matches will be staggered at 12:30, 17:30 and 20:00 GMT, ensuring live coverage throughout the day.
The festive programme does not end there. A further three matches will be staged the following day, Sunday 27 December, continuing the traditional heavy schedule of fixtures around the Christmas period. The busy run of games will then continue with three additional rounds to be completed by Thursday 7 January.
Fans can expect a midweek round of evening fixtures on 29 and 30 December, offering clubs a chance to build momentum before the turn of the year. New Year's Day will see a single match take centre stage, with Leeds United hosting Everton at 20:00 GMT.
The rest of that particular round of fixtures will be completed over the weekend of 2-3 January, before the festive period concludes with a fourth round of matches distributed across the evenings of 5, 6 and 7 January.
This year's announcement has come earlier than in previous seasons, following consultation between the Premier League, its broadcast partners, the Football Supporters' Association, and representatives from individual clubs' Fan Advisory Boards. The move appears designed to give supporters more notice for travel planning during one of the busiest periods of the football calendar.
Television selections for Premier League matches have already been confirmed up to Monday 2 November. The league has indicated that broadcast picks for the remaining fixtures in November and December will be announced in the weeks commencing 21 September and 19 October respectively, giving clubs and fans further clarity closer to the time.
Addressing longstanding concerns from players, managers and medical staff about fixture congestion during the festive window, the Premier League has also guaranteed all clubs a minimum 60-hour rest period between matches throughout this period. The commitment comes amid growing scrutiny over player welfare, particularly given the expansion of both European club competitions and the international match calendar in recent seasons, which has placed additional strain on top-flight squads.
The heavier Boxing Day schedule represents a notable shift from last year's more subdued approach, when only a single fixture was played on 26 December. The change is likely to be welcomed by broadcasters and fans eager for a full programme of festive football, though it may also reignite debate over the demands placed on players during the traditionally hectic winter fixture pile-up.
