Fenerbahce were plunged into confusion on Thursday night after head coach Ismail Kartal used his post-match press conference to announce he was stepping down, only for club president Aziz Yildirim to immediately reject the decision and insist the veteran boss remains in charge.
The stunning turn of events unfolded following Fenerbahce's 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League, a result that left the Turkish giants with just one point from their opening group match in the competition. English full-back Archie Brown had cancelled out Bryan Cristante's first-half opener for the Italian visitors with a 48th-minute equaliser, in what appeared to be a solid if unspectacular outing for Kartal's side.
But instead of discussing the match, Kartal used the platform to reveal he was walking away from the club, declaring his intention never to return in any capacity. "I have been here three months. From the beginning of the season until today, the training sessions and camps we held with the players, and the efforts of our president, have been very helpful. Those were wonderful days," he told reporters. "As of this evening, I congratulate my players and resign from my position. I made this decision to pave the way for my club. We made this decision together as a team. From now on, to help Fenerbahce, my players and future coaches, I have resigned from my position, with the intention of never returning."
The announcement blindsided almost everyone connected with the club, including the players themselves. Brown, speaking shortly after the news broke, appeared completely unaware of what had happened. "What do you mean he resigned? As coach? He's not the coach any more? He said this just now? I didn't know about this," the defender said.
Despite Kartal's clear words, Yildirim moved quickly to override the decision. In a statement posted on Fenerbahce's official website, the president declared that Kartal remained in his post regardless of what had been said publicly. "Ismail Kartal is still in charge. The club should support our coach. Until I leave, Ismail Kartal is the head coach of Fenerbahce," Yildirim said, adding, "Ismail Kartal doesn't need to say he'll continue. I am his senior. I said he'll continue, and that's it. We're a family."
According to Yildirim, a subsequent phone conversation with Kartal revealed the coach had been affected by mounting pressure surrounding his role, as well as an unsettling incident during the match in which he was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands. Fenerbahce later confirmed via social media that the individual responsible had been identified and banned from attending future matches at the stadium.
Yildirim also used his statement to criticise elements of the club's fanbase and media coverage, arguing that persistent negativity had contributed to the pressure Kartal was under. He urged supporters and journalists alike to "uphold the values of the Fenerbahce community" and treat the coach with greater respect, insisting that genuine backing, not hostility, was what the situation demanded.
Kartal's ties to Fenerbahce run deep. He returned for a fourth managerial spell in June, having previously served the club as both a player and assistant coach, and won the Turkish Super Cup during an earlier stint in charge in 2014. As a player, he collected six trophies, including two league titles.
His current tenure has been far from smooth, however. Fenerbahce sit ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after four league matches, with two wins and two losses, while Thursday's draw with Roma marked their first Champions League fixture in 18 years following the club's return to Europe's premier competition.
With the club publicly insisting Kartal remains in post despite his own words to the contrary, the situation at Fenerbahce appears far from resolved, and further clarity is expected in the coming days.
