Former Liverpool forward Jordan Ibe has been spared prison after admitting to assaulting his ex-girlfriend during a confrontation outside her home in south London last December.
Croydon Magistrates' Court heard on Friday that the 30-year-old attacked Amie Mayson on 14 December in Lambeth after she pressed him to return money she claimed he owed her. According to prosecutor Aya Alshekhili, the dispute escalated when Ibe responded to the request by telling Mayson, "No, I'm going to be a prick."
The court was told that Ibe had arrived carrying a bag containing drinks, snacks and flowers, but the encounter turned physical after Mayson referred to him as a "druggy." In response, Ibe seized her arm forcefully before pulling one of her hair braids out.
Magistrate Brij Kalia handed Ibe a 12-month community order alongside 80 hours of unpaid work and 27 days of rehabilitation activity requirements. He was additionally ordered to pay a £764 fine, comprising a £114 victim surcharge and £650 in court costs.
Ibe chose to represent himself during the proceedings, appearing in court dressed in a black coat and trousers. Addressing the magistrate directly, he acknowledged the severity of his actions.
"I made a serious mistake," Ibe told the court. "I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful. I've had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next."
Prosecutor Alshekhili detailed the lasting effects of the assault on Mayson, stating it had left her confidence, self-esteem and self-worth "on the floor." A victim impact statement submitted to the court and read aloud captured her perspective on the incident's aftermath.
"I want the court to understand the impact that this incident has had," Mayson said in the statement. "The assault has had a significant impact on me both physically and mentally."
Despite the trauma, Mayson indicated she still harbored some compassion toward her former partner. She acknowledged continuing to experience fear following the attack but described forgiveness as an important element of her recovery process.
Ibe, who lives in Chislehurst, southeast London, initially denied the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when it was first brought in March. He subsequently changed his plea to guilty in July.
The court heard additional context about the nature of the relationship between the pair, with Alshekhili noting they had maintained an "on and off" romantic connection dating back to late 2024.
Ibe's career trajectory has taken him through several clubs since his breakthrough at Liverpool, where he made 58 first-team appearances. He went on to play for Derby County, Birmingham City and Bournemouth, and also earned recognition at international level with England's under-21 side.
More recently, Ibe's football journey led him abroad, where he signed for Lokomotiv Sofia in Bulgaria's top division in November 2025 following a spell playing non-league football in England over the previous two years. However, his time at the Bulgarian club came to an end in June.
