Harrison Biggins has etched his name into English football's history books after producing a stunning long-range goal that ranks among the most remarkable strikes ever seen in the English Football League.
The Newport County midfielder found the net from a measured distance of 77.7 yards during his side's 2-1 defeat at Salford City, a strike that has drawn comparisons to some of the most celebrated wonder-goals in the sport's history, including efforts from David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.
The goal came as Newport searched for a foothold in a difficult away fixture. Biggins collected the ball deep inside his own half, took a touch, beat an opponent, and noticed Salford goalkeeper Norris positioned well off his line. Rather than opting for a safer option, the midfielder unleashed a shot that sailed the length of the pitch and dropped into the net, sending the travelling Newport supporters into raptures. Despite the quality of the finish, Salford staged a late fightback to secure the victory.
Newport manager Hayden Mullins revealed the effort was not out of character for his player, recalling two previous instances of similar ambition. Biggins had already attempted a near-halfway lob during a pre-season fixture against Roma and struck the post with a 40-yard volley against Bristol Rovers earlier in his Newport career.
"The goalkeeper was pretty high out the box and if there's one person who's going to try that, it is him," Mullins said. "I didn't expect him to score, but it is a fantastic goal."
While Biggins' effort falls short of the outright world record, it firmly establishes itself among the finest long-distance strikes recorded in English football. That record belongs to former Newport goalkeeper Tom King, whose extraordinary 105-yard goal-kick sailed over Cheltenham's Joshua Griffiths in 2021 during blustery conditions at the Jonny-Rock Stadium. The strike, aided heavily by the wind, surpassed Asmir Begovic's previous mark of 100.5 yards and remains recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest goal ever scored in a competitive match. It also marked the first time an English Football League goalkeeper had scored since Barry Roche's effort for Morecambe against Portsmouth in 2016.
The longest goal scored by an outfield player belongs to Moritz Stoppelkamp, whose 91-yard volley for Paderborn against Hannover in a 2014 Bundesliga match set a new distance record for Germany's top flight, eclipsing the previous mark by Giorgos Tzavellas.
Biggins' strike does, however, surpass several iconic Premier League and international moments. Wayne Rooney's 61-yard effort for Everton against West Ham in 2017, which completed his first hat-trick in over six years, falls almost 20 yards short of the Newport man's effort. Xabi Alonso's memorable 60.6-yard strike for Liverpool against Newcastle, and a similar effort against Luton in the FA Cup that same season, also rank behind Biggins' goal, as does Josh Windass' 60-yard strike for Sheffield Wednesday on New Year's Day 2025.
Even Beckham's iconic 57-yard lob against Wimbledon in 1996, often regarded as one of the defining moments of his career, is now outdone in terms of pure distance by the Newport midfielder's effort.
While Biggins' goal came in a losing cause on a wet and windy League Two night, it has nonetheless secured its place among the competition's most extraordinary long-range strikes, joining an elite list of footballing feats stretching from Beckham to Rooney to King.
