Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on the club's supporters to appreciate the squad's existing strength rather than dwell on the marquee attacking addition that never materialised before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
The Premier League champions were active in the market throughout the summer, holding an interest in both Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez as they sought to add a genuine game-changer in attack. However, both deals fell through, with the Spanish-based duo remaining at their respective clubs despite Arsenal's pursuit stretching deep into the window.
Instead of a headline forward signing, Arsenal's only recruit in that area of the pitch was Christos Tzolis, a comparatively low-key addition compared to the ambitions the club had set out at the start of the summer. Meanwhile, the Gunners moved several attacking players on, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus all departing the Emirates Stadium before deadline day.
Despite the lack of a statement attacking arrival, Arteta was keen to stress that Arsenal have strengthened in other areas and that the overall squad is in a healthier position than it was 12 months ago. The club brought in Ezri Konsa to add defensive depth, particularly useful given the ongoing absence of William Saliba, while Bruno Guimaraes arrived to bolster the midfield options.
Speaking after the window closed, Arteta acknowledged that supporters will always crave further reinforcements, but urged a broader perspective on what the squad already possesses.
"That's human nature, I think," Arteta said. "When you talk to people and you ask the people, normally it's: 'Ok, what is on your bucket list?' People write a lot about the bucket list. Sometimes we forget the reverse bucket list, which is the things that you already have in your life that are incredible, but you put so much emphasis on them that nothing seems to be enough."
The Spaniard extended the point beyond football, suggesting it reflects a wider tendency in life to overlook what is already valuable while chasing what is missing. "It's not only in football, it happens in life and I think it's very important to value," he said. "That's what I said about the squad and how much I love our players. That I really value what we have, what we have created together. The ambition is great."
Arteta added that maintaining high standards and continuing to evolve the group remains essential, but insisted this should not come at the expense of recognising the quality Arsenal already possess. "To have ambition always to be better, especially to evolve the things we already have within the club that for sure has to be there," he said. "But listen - do not lose perspective to what we already have which is amazing and we are very lucky to have."
When pressed on whether his side are now stronger than they were at this stage last season, Arteta responded confidently. "Yes I do. This is what I feel. Now we have to prove it. I think we are better equipped. I think we have more players available than what we had at the start of last season," he said. "We have increased the quality and we have increased the leadership in the team as well which is very important."
With the transfer window now shut, Arteta's message effectively shifts the conversation away from what Arsenal failed to land and towards what the existing group can achieve. The champions will now be judged on results rather than transfer business, as attention turns fully to defending their title on the pitch.
