Graham Potter has responded to online criticism of his managerial record with a pointed message aimed at the turmoil he encountered during his time at Chelsea and West Ham, without directly naming either club.
The former Brighton boss took to Instagram to share images from a Pilates session, prompting a fan to comment: "Hopefully you are better at Pilates than you are a football manager." Potter did not let the jibe slide, replying, "I'll try not to do Pilates in a dysfunctional place and I will be ok."
When another user pressed him to clarify which of his previous jobs he was referencing, Potter was quick to sidestep a direct accusation, writing, "Easy tiger. I never mentioned West Ham or any club." The remark nonetheless appeared to be a thinly veiled reference to the chaotic circumstances that surrounded both his Chelsea and West Ham tenures.
Potter went further in a subsequent exchange, responding to a supporter who told him to "ignore the haters." He wrote: "Of course I am responsible for my part but unfortunately lots happen at football clubs to determine success or failure, not just one man! COYI."
The comments come after a difficult period in Potter's club career. He was sacked by Chelsea less than a year into a five-year contract, having won only 12 of his 31 matches in charge at Stamford Bridge. His exit followed widespread instability behind the scenes at the west London club.
His subsequent appointment at West Ham United also ended prematurely and under strained circumstances. Potter departed with the Hammers sitting in the Premier League relegation zone, having collected just three points from their opening five league fixtures. His time at the London Stadium was further complicated by sustained supporter discontent, with numerous home matches accompanied by organised protests targeting the club's ownership, David Sullivan and Karren Brady.
Despite the setbacks in club football, Potter's fortunes have taken a markedly positive turn since taking charge of the Sweden national team. He was brought in to salvage a faltering World Cup qualification campaign and succeeded in steering the side through a difficult group to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, finishing third before advancing further. Sweden's run eventually ended with a defeat to France in the last 32.
The contrast between his rocky Premier League spells and his early success on the international stage appears to have emboldened Potter to address the criticism levelled at him following his club departures. While he stopped short of directly blaming either Chelsea or West Ham for his struggles, his comments suggest he views the boardroom disruption at both clubs as a significant factor in his lack of sustained success.
