Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has described the club's summer transfer activity as the completion of an important first stage in a longer-term project, following a busy window that included the departure of midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez, who had long signalled his desire to leave Stamford Bridge, completed a move away from the club after attracting sustained interest from Manchester City throughout the summer. The Argentine's exit was reportedly driven in part by a reunion with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who is now in charge at City and was keen to work with his namesake again.
Despite losing a key player from his midfield, Alonso struck a positive tone when reflecting on Chelsea's business overall. The club broke their own British transfer record for player sales during the window while also bringing in ten new first-team signings, headlined by the £117 million arrival of Morgan Rogers.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Alonso framed the summer's dealings as the first step of a broader strategy rather than a finished product. "I think that it's a very balanced structure, phase one, that we have made in this transfer window with what we had and where we are now," he said. "It's a good first one. Phase one is completed. It's a good one for now and for the future."
The Spanish coach was keen to stress that decisions on incomings and outgoings were made collectively within the club's football operations, rather than being his call alone. "We take all the decisions together. We are responsible for them. We have worked together with every decision, big ones, small ones, because we knew that ultimately the last goal is to have the best for the team, the best for the squad, the best for daily work here," Alonso explained.
He added that the club's approach throughout the window had been guided by a desire to foster unity and ambition within the squad. "We want to build a good spirit, a good team and we have always taken decisions thinking that we wanted to reach that," he said.
Turning to Fernandez's departure specifically, Alonso acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football business while expressing gratitude for the midfielder's contributions during his time at the club. "In football, many things happen and you need to be prepared for everything. With Enzo, we have had conversations, but we always respect what he has done for the club," the Chelsea boss said.
"It has been great — we are thankful — but now it's time to move forward," he continued. "We have the squad that we have, we have a lot of big personalities and players with a lot of quality in all the different positions, different lines and now we are ready to go."
With the transfer window now closed, attention turns to how Alonso integrates his new arrivals, including Rogers, into a squad reshaped by the sales that funded much of the summer's recruitment. The Chelsea manager's comments suggest the club views this window as a foundation rather than a finished rebuild, with further phases likely to follow as the project develops under his stewardship.
