English football's summer transfer window closed at 11pm BST on Tuesday, capping a frantic final day that saw Premier League clubs spend heavily on late deals, with Sunderland pulling off one of the day's biggest surprises by hijacking Arsenal's move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.
Arsenal had opened talks with the Ligue 1 club on Monday but refused to match Lyon's asking price of around €40million, according to reports. Sunderland moved decisively, agreeing a deal worth an initial €30million plus add-ons, with the 21-year-old flying to the north east to complete his medical ahead of signing a five-year contract. The Wearside club are believed to have structured the package to satisfy Lyon's valuation. Fofana had reportedly held talks with Mikel Arteta and was previously on Crystal Palace's radar earlier in the summer, though he was unwilling to join the Eagles. Arsenal, who lost Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli this summer, remain short on the left flank and were exploring other attacking options as the deadline approached, though a move for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez appeared unlikely to materialise. Martinelli himself was set to complete a club-record £56m switch to Al Hilal.
Elsewhere, Chelsea made a bid worth around €45m for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as a potential alternative to Enzo Fernandez, whose proposed move to Manchester City remained unresolved. Chelsea were also pushing for Roma's Manu Kone, though the Italian club were reluctant to sell. Marc Guiu departed Stamford Bridge for RB Leipzig.
Everton had one of the busiest days of any club, bringing in Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City as part of a deal that saw Iliman Ndiaye move to the Etihad for £65m. The Toffees also progressed a £40m deal for Monaco and USA striker Folarin Balogun, while Nathan Patterson headed to Torino and Kenny Tete arrived from Fulham for a fee in the region of £9m.
Newcastle agreed to send striker Nick Woltemade, signed for a club-record £69m from Stuttgart only a year ago, on a season-long loan to Juventus worth around £3.5m, while bringing in Lille's Matias Fernandez-Pardo for a fee between £51m and £55m.
Aston Villa were closing in on a double deal for Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with manager Unai Emery not expecting further additions. Ipswich completed the signing of Burnley striker Zian Flemming for around £17m, while Hull were active throughout the day, adding forward Ilyas Ansah from Union Berlin for £21m.
