Wrexham have strengthened their defensive options with the addition of centre-back Joe Worrall from Burnley, as manager Phil Parkinson continues to reshape his squad ahead of a crucial period in the Championship.
Worrall, who has struggled for game time at Turf Moor this season, arrives at the Racecourse Ground with a wealth of experience in the second tier and a reputation as a leader at the back. The defender has been an unused substitute in each of Burnley's opening three Championship fixtures under new head coach Nicky Hayen, with his only appearance this campaign coming in the Clarets' EFL Cup first-round win over Notts County.
Speaking about his move, Worrall made clear his ambitions with his new club. "I'm here to win football matches and achieve something special," he said. "Everything that Wrexham's about, I'm going to throw myself into it head-first and give my all for this badge."
Parkinson welcomed the signing, highlighting the defender's pedigree and character. "We're delighted to welcome Joe to the club," the Wrexham boss said. "He's an experienced centre-half with good leadership qualities who's been part of promotions out of this division. We look forward to welcoming him into the squad."
Worrall came through the ranks at Nottingham Forest, his boyhood club, where he went on to make 226 appearances before departing for Burnley last summer. He was named Forest's player of the season in 2020-21, a campaign that preceded his central role in the club's promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs the following season. That performance earned him a place in the Championship's team of the season for 2021-22.
During his time developing at Forest, Worrall also gained experience through loan spells at Dagenham & Redbridge, Rangers, and Besiktas, where he claimed the Turkish Cup in the 2023-24 season. His switch to Burnley last summer yielded 27 appearances across all competitions before his opportunities became limited under Hayen.
The move to Wrexham comes after the departure of Conor Coady, the 10-cap England international who left the club by mutual consent having failed to feature in any of Wrexham's four matchday squads so far this season.
Worrall's arrival forms part of a busy summer of transfer activity at the Racecourse Ground. Wrexham have already brought in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, wing-backs Danny Imray, Issa Kabore and Jacques Ekomie, along with central midfielder Ben Whiteman, as Parkinson looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Championship.
With the transfer deadline approaching, further movement is expected at the club. Elliot Lee, Harry Ashfield and Aaron James could all depart either on loan or permanently before the window closes, while Wrexham may also look to add another forward option to their ranks in the closing stages of the summer market.
Attention now turns to matchday action, with Parkinson's side set to travel to face Millwall on Wednesday evening, kicking off at 19:45 BST, as they look to build momentum in their Championship campaign.
