Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is poised to complete a season-long loan move to Borussia Dortmund, with the young forward due to travel to Germany to complete a medical and finalise the necessary paperwork before the transfer deadline.
The move represents a fresh opportunity for Nwaneri after a difficult spell away from Emirates Stadium last season. He spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Marseille, but the switch to Ligue 1 did not go to plan, with the England youth international restricted to minimal playing time and facing scrutiny over his attitude and commitment during his time in the south of France.
Having returned to north London for pre-season, Nwaneri has featured for Arsenal in their warm-up fixtures, but the club had signalled they were willing to sanction a temporary departure if the right opportunity arose. That opportunity has now materialised in the form of Dortmund, a club not unfamiliar with Nwaneri's talents. The Bundesliga side had previously attempted to sign him outright roughly a year ago, only for the teenager to commit his long-term future to Arsenal by signing a new contract at the time.
Under the terms of the agreement being finalised, Dortmund will take on responsibility for Nwaneri's wages throughout the duration of the loan spell. Notably, there is no obligation or option included in the deal that would require Dortmund to make the move permanent at a later stage, meaning Nwaneri's long-term future remains tied to Arsenal regardless of how the loan unfolds.
The driving factor behind the move has been Nwaneri's desire for consistent first-team opportunities, something Arsenal have acknowledged would be difficult to guarantee this season given the club's depth in forward positions. While a wave of expected departures among Arsenal's attacking players had briefly raised the possibility that a pathway might open up for Nwaneri to remain, the picture has since become clearer.
Leandro Trossard left the club earlier in the transfer window, and Arsenal have so far only brought in Christos Tzolis as a new addition in forward areas. That has left Arsenal looking somewhat short of natural options out on the left flank, but Nwaneri primarily operates on the right or through the middle, meaning the club determined his route to regular minutes was still too obstructed to justify keeping him.
Dortmund's interest was not simply about squad depth from a development perspective, either. The German club had been closely tracking Nwaneri's circumstances, and their approach became formalised following confirmation that summer signing Giannis Konstantelias had suffered a serious ACL injury. With Konstantelias now facing a lengthy period on the sidelines, Dortmund moved quickly to identify Nwaneri as a ready-made replacement capable of contributing to their attacking options this season.
For Nwaneri, the switch to the Bundesliga offers a chance to rebuild momentum in his development away from the intense competition for places at Arsenal, in an environment that has historically shown a willingness to trust and develop young talent. Should the move go through as expected on deadline day, he will spend the 2025-26 campaign in Germany before any decisions are made about his Arsenal future beyond this season.
