Southampton have completed the return of former captain James Ward-Prowse, bringing the midfielder back to St Mary's after a spell away that took in West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Burnley.
The 31-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Championship club, with the transfer said to be worth just under £1m. It marks the end of a journey that began when Ward-Prowse departed Southampton in 2023 to join West Ham, a switch that came after he had spent his entire footballing life at the south coast club.
During his time away, Ward-Prowse made 75 appearances for West Ham before going out on loan, first to Nottingham Forest and then to Burnley, where he featured 14 times in the most recent campaign. Now, with his top-flight adventures behind him for the time being, he finds himself back where it all started.
Ward-Prowse joined Southampton's academy at the age of eight and rose through the ranks to become a first-team regular, eventually amassing 410 appearances for the club before his move to West Ham. In that time he established himself as one of the most reliable dead-ball specialists in English football, netting 55 goals and providing 52 assists. Remarkably, 17 of those goals came from free-kicks in the Premier League, leaving him just one shy of David Beckham's record of 18 in the competition.
Speaking about his homecoming, Ward-Prowse admitted the move had come together quickly and that emotions were running high. "It feels a bit surreal," he said. "The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special."
The midfielder, who has represented England on 11 occasions and scored twice for his country, reflected on what it means to wear Southampton's colours once more given his long association with the club. "It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight," he said. "It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be."
Ward-Prowse also expressed enthusiasm about the task ahead as Southampton look to bounce back following their relegation from the Premier League. "I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead," he added.
His return gives Southampton a proven leader and set-piece expert to call upon as they attempt to climb back towards the top flight. Having captained the side during his first spell at the club, Ward-Prowse will be expected to bring both experience and quality to a Saints squad rebuilding after a difficult period.
The move represents something of a full-circle moment for a player who has long been associated with Southampton's identity, and supporters will hope his homecoming can inject fresh belief into the club's push for promotion.
