Tottenham Hotspur's newest signing has made a subtle but notable change following his £85 million transfer from Manchester City, opting to drop the 'Savinho' moniker that fans became familiar with during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
The 22-year-old Brazilian winger will now appear on the back of his shirt simply as Savio, reverting to his given name after two years of being known by the diminutive version during his spell in Manchester.
This is not the first occasion the player has altered the name displayed on his shirt. The change came about following his move to City after an impressive loan spell at Girona, where he had previously gone by his real name, Savio.
The origins of the 'Savinho' nickname trace back to his early involvement with the Brazilian national team, where the shirt printer used the shortened version during his first call-up. Speaking in July 2024, Savio explained the reasoning behind adopting the name for his Manchester City spell.
"[My name change] is because in the national team, the first call-up they put Savinho on the shirt," he said. "People in Girona knew me more as Savinho, it was just written Savio on the shirt, you know? So I told [City] to put Savinho on the shirt and I hope it brings me luck too, this name Savinho."
No official explanation has yet been given for why he has now decided to switch back to Savio ahead of his Tottenham career, but the timing could prove to be a promising sign for Spurs supporters.
His most productive individual season came during his loan year at Girona in the 2023-24 campaign, when he wore 'Savio' on his shirt. That season, he registered 11 goals and ten assists, numbers that helped establish him as one of the most sought-after young talents in European football and ultimately paved the way for his big-money move to Manchester City.
By contrast, his two seasons at City under the 'Savinho' name yielded somewhat different output. While he contributed 13 assists across all competitions in the 2024-25 season, showcasing his creative abilities, his goal return was comparatively modest, with just seven goals scored in 84 appearances for the club during that period.
The statistical contrast between his two spells - and the two different names - has led to some light-hearted suggestions that switching back to Savio might bring a change in fortune, particularly in terms of his goal-scoring output, as he embarks on this new chapter of his career in north London.
Savio's £85 million switch represents a significant investment from Tottenham, who will be hoping the winger can rediscover the incisive, goal-threatening form he showed during his breakout campaign in Spain. His versatility and attacking output, whether in the form of goals or assists, will be seen as crucial additions to Spurs' options going forward.
Whether the name change proves to be the good omen some are hoping for remains to be seen, but for now, supporters at Tottenham will simply be eager to see the Brazilian make an impact on the pitch, whichever name appears on the back of his shirt.
