Jed York, the chief executive of the San Francisco 49ers and a co-owner of both Rangers and Leeds United through the NFL franchise's investment arm 49ers Enterprises, has been jailed following an arrest connected to prostitution, according to reports.
York holds his ownership stakes in the two football clubs through 49ers Enterprises but is not involved in the day-to-day running of either operation. Despite his position as a prominent figure within the ownership structures of both clubs, Rangers and Leeds have declined to comment publicly on the matter.
In a statement, 49ers Enterprises addressed the situation briefly, saying: "As this is a legal matter, which has been resolved, we will not be providing any further comment at this time."
The National Football League has also confirmed it is aware of the arrest. Given York's status as an NFL owner, he falls under the jurisdiction of the league's personal conduct policy, which governs the behaviour of players, coaches, and franchise owners alike. "We are aware of the matter which will be reviewed under the personal conduct policy," the league said in response to enquiries.
York's connection to Rangers dates back to last year, when 49ers Enterprises became part of a US-led consortium that took control of the Scottish Premiership giants. That takeover was completed in May 2025, spearheaded by American businessman Andrew Cavenagh, who assumed the role of Rangers chairman after the consortium acquired a controlling 51% stake in the club. The deal came after an extended period of negotiation and marked a significant shift for Rangers, placing the historic Glasgow club under majority ownership from across the Atlantic. Within that new ownership framework, 49ers Enterprises has taken on a prominent role in shaping the club's direction.
York's involvement with English football, meanwhile, predates the Rangers deal by several years. 49ers Enterprises first invested in Leeds United back in 2018, at a time when the Yorkshire club was competing in the Championship. That initial investment grew steadily over the following years as Leeds worked their way back into the Premier League, ending a 16-year absence from the English top flight. The relationship between the 49ers' investment arm and Leeds deepened further in 2023, when 49ers Enterprises assumed full ownership of the club.
As a result, York now sits at the intersection of two major football ownership groups on either side of the border, in addition to his primary role running one of the NFL's most storied franchises. His position as the 49ers' principal owner and chief executive means the outcome of any NFL review under the league's conduct policy could carry implications beyond the football pitch, potentially affecting his standing within American football's ownership ranks as well.
For now, both Rangers and Leeds appear intent on distancing their clubs from the personal legal matter involving one of their ownership figures, opting for silence rather than public statements.
