Arsenal Move to Calm Speculation Over Myles Lewis-Skelly's Future Amid Manchester United Talk

Arsenal have moved to address growing speculation surrounding the future of academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly, following suggestions that Manchester United could look to sign the young defender for around £45million.

The interest gained traction after former United striker Wayne Rooney publicly urged his old club to pursue a deal for the 18-year-old, describing the potential transfer as a "no-brainer" given United's ongoing search for reinforcements at left-back.

Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney explained why he believed Lewis-Skelly would represent shrewd business for United, pointing to doubts over the reliability of current left-back Luke Shaw.

"I don't think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season and that leads me to Myles Lewis-Skelly," Rooney said. "We're hearing that he could be available for not that much money, so I think that's an absolute no-brainer. If you can get a player in who can play left-back and centre-midfield, that's an absolute no-brainer. He's young and he's got a massive future ahead of him."

Rooney went further, suggesting that Arsenal's heavy spending in recent transfer windows could make a sale of Lewis-Skelly financially logical, even if it would not sit well with supporters.

"Arsenal have spent a lot over the last couple of years so selling Lewis-Skelly makes some sense as it would be pure profit," he added. "I don't think it would be a great look but I can see why they might sell him. If you're United and he becomes available it's a no-brainer, they definitely need to bring in a left-back, that's a priority for United."

Despite the mounting external pressure, Arsenal's chief executive Richard Garlick has attempted to dampen any suggestion that the club is willing to part with the versatile teenager, who can operate both at left-back and in central midfield.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Garlick praised Lewis-Skelly's development and stressed the club's desire to keep hold of him, while stopping short of directly addressing the reported United interest.

"Myles has had a fantastic end to last season and he started this season really well and as I say we're always looking to retain and build on our best players," Garlick said. "Obviously there may be speculation, I'm not going to go into that from other clubs but we're very happy with Myles and the position he's in at the club."

However, in a separate interview with the BBC, Garlick's comments appeared slightly less definitive, leaving open the possibility that Arsenal could eventually sanction a departure for Lewis-Skelly or fellow homegrown talent Ethan Nwaneri under the right circumstances.

"We're not actively looking at selling those homegrown players, but if the right opportunity came up and it was right for them and right for the club, then we'd obviously consider that," he explained.

The mixed messaging from Arsenal's hierarchy has done little to quiet the rumours, with United continuing to be linked with a move for a player who has quickly established himself as one of English football's most promising young talents. Lewis-Skelly's versatility and rapid rise through Arsenal's ranks have made him a subject of significant transfer interest, though for now, the north London club maintain that their priority remains keeping him at the Emirates Stadium.
