BBC Football Launches New YouTube Shows with Frank, Alderweireld, Keane and Young

BBC Sport is expanding its football content offering ahead of the new men's football season with the launch of four fresh YouTube formats, bringing in a host of familiar faces from the game.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has been confirmed as part of the new lineup, joined by former Spurs and Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, who makes his first appearance in this kind of role for the broadcaster. Robbie Keane and Ashley Young have also been announced as additions to the project.

The four new shows - FANS², The Truth About Football, Golden Goal and Football Hub - will air on the BBC Football YouTube channel, marking a significant push by the corporation into digital-first content as viewing habits continue to shift away from traditional broadcast formats.

Frank is no stranger to BBC football coverage, having previously featured as a guest on the corporation's long-running highlights programme, Match of the Day. Alderweireld, however, represents a new face for BBC audiences in this capacity, adding a fresh voice with recent Premier League playing experience to the network's expanding roster of pundits and contributors.

The move comes at a time when Match of the Day itself faces an uncertain future. The programme, which has been a staple of English football broadcasting since 1964, has seen its dominance challenged by the rapid rise of podcast-based football content in recent years.

Chief among the competitors is The Rest Is Football, the podcast fronted by Gary Lineker that has grown into one of the most popular football media products in the country. Netflix struck a deal to carry the podcast in the buildup to the World Cup, and has since extended its partnership with the show for the next two Premier League seasons, further cementing its position as a major player in football content.

Despite the growing competition, BBC's traditional Match of the Day panel appears set to remain largely unchanged for now. Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Danny Murphy are all expected to continue their punditry duties on the show when it returns this weekend.

Notably, both Shearer and Richards also feature prominently on The Rest Is Football, which is produced by Lineker's own Goalhanger production company - meaning the two pundits will effectively be represented across both the BBC's flagship show and one of its most direct digital rivals simultaneously.

The launch of the new YouTube shows suggests the BBC is looking to diversify its football output rather than rely solely on the traditional highlights format, potentially reaching younger or more digitally engaged audiences who have gravitated toward on-demand and podcast-style content in recent years.

Match of the Day itself is set to return this Saturday as the 2026-27 Premier League season gets underway, with the new YouTube formats expected to run alongside the show as part of the BBC's broader football coverage strategy for the campaign.

It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to the new formats, and whether they can carve out a distinct space within an increasingly crowded football media landscape dominated by both traditional broadcasters and independent podcast productions.
