West Ham Land Prolific Striker Joel Piroe on Loan Deal With Option to Buy

West Ham United have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Joel Piroe, confirming the forward's arrival on a loan deal that includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent should the club secure promotion to the Premier League next season.

The agreement, understood to be worth up to £12million in total including loan fees, sees Piroe join from Leeds United and take up the number nine shirt at the London Stadium. The move underlines the scale of West Ham's ambitions as they push for an immediate return to the top flight.

Born in the Netherlands but an international for Suriname, the 27-year-old arrives with an outstanding scoring record in the Championship. Piroe has netted 73 goals across four seasons in England's second tier, spread across spells with Swansea City and Leeds, and was the division's leading marksman last season with 19 goals as Leeds clinched the title and promotion.

His journey through English football began in 2021 when he left PSV Eindhoven for Swansea, where he scored 44 times in two seasons and established himself as one of the Championship's most reliable finishers. He then moved to Leeds in 2023, adding a further 33 goals over two campaigns and playing a key role in the Yorkshire club's promotion charge.

Now Piroe will look to replicate that scoring touch in east London as West Ham aim to bounce straight back to the Premier League. Speaking after the deal was finalised, the striker expressed his excitement at the move and his belief in the club's project.

"It's a joy to have got everything over the line," Piroe said. "I'm delighted to be here and I'm ready to go."

He added that he views West Ham as a club with genuine top-flight credentials. "I see West Ham as a club that really wants to be in the Premier League, and I think should be in the Premier League. With my experience, I think I can help the club a lot to achieve what they want to achieve," he said.

Piroe also credited conversations with director of player recruitment Nils Koppen and head coach Nuno Espirito Santo for persuading him that the switch was the right decision. "They were both very clear about what the goals for the club are, both in the short term and the long term," he explained. "It felt like a good match for me."

For his part, Koppen was quick to highlight the qualities that made Piroe a priority target for the club's recruitment department. "Joel has proven experience and success in the Championship and is someone who loves scoring goals," Koppen said. "But more importantly, he is hungry, ambitious and really wants to be here to embrace the challenge in front of us."

Koppen expressed confidence that the striker's arrival will bolster West Ham's forward line and that Piroe is capable of making an impact right away as the club embarks on its promotion campaign. With his track record of consistent goal contributions in the Championship, the Dutch-born forward will be expected to lead the line as West Ham target an immediate return to English football's top tier.
