Aston Villa Close In on Wan-Bissaka Signing as West Ham Continue Squad Overhaul

Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United, with the right-back set for a medical in the Midlands before completing a move that will see him join on an initial loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old, who represents DR Congo internationally, has been given permission to travel for the medical, though the precise financial terms of the deal have not been confirmed. West Ham had previously indicated they wanted around £25million from any interested club before entering more detailed talks with Villa.

Wan-Bissaka's departure comes after a difficult end to last season at the London Stadium, where West Ham were relegated from the Premier League. The former Manchester United and Crystal Palace defender made 25 top-flight appearances for the Hammers last term but fell out of favour as the campaign wound down, starting five of the club's final seven league matches on the bench. He has sat out West Ham's opening two matches of the new season while the move to Villa Park was finalised.

For Unai Emery, the arrival strengthens a position where Villa have been seeking additional competition for Matty Cash at right-back. It forms part of a busy summer of business at Villa Park despite the club recording the lowest net spend in the Premier League, at roughly £110million once sales are accounted for. That figure was heavily influenced by the £117million sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, one of the standout transfers of the window.

In terms of incomings, Villa have already added midfielders Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes, along with promising young centre-back Modou Keba Cisse. They have also brought in Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho on a loan deal that includes an obligation to make the move permanent.

Villa open their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on Sunday at 14:00 BST, and will also feature in the Champions League this season having finished fourth in the league and won the Europa League under Emery last term.

For West Ham, Wan-Bissaka becomes the latest in a string of departures as the club reshapes its squad following relegation. Mateus Fernandes has joined Tottenham Hotspur for £85million, while Crysencio Summerville has moved to Al-Hilal for £60million. Striker Niclas Fullkrug has also left on a season-long loan to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. Amid the outgoings, West Ham secured some positive news by tying captain Jarrod Bowen down to a new contract.

The Hammers are also working to bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes and are close to finalising a deal for Leeds United striker Joel Piroe. According to reports, Piroe has already undergone a medical ahead of a season-long loan move that would become permanent should West Ham secure promotion back to the Premier League.
